Lymphatic Vessels. A system of absorbent vessels. Malleus. Literally, the mallet; one of the small bones of the middle ear. Marrow. The soft, fatty substance contained in the cavities of bones. The act of cutting and grinding the food to pieces by means of the teeth. A passage or canal. Medulla Oblongata.

If, instead of cutting the spinal cord, we separate the medulla oblongata from the pons, an immediate rise of temperature occurs, and continues until death, whether the operation be performed in a cold or heated room. Cutting the medulla at its junction with the pons causes, then, an immediate and direct elevation of temperature, without disturbance of the circulation. What can this mean?

If the heart is slowed as a whole, the trouble might be due to diseased arteries or pressure from a growth, a gumma, perhaps, or other brain tumor in the region of the pons Varolii or medulla oblongata; or a hemorrhage into the fourth ventricle, causing pressure, could be the cause. The treatment of true Stokes-Adams disease is unsuccessful.

He never had been met in that way before, and was not inclined to leave the field without in some way convincing Jim of his own superiority. "Mr. Fenton," said he, "did you ever see a medulla oblongata?" "Well, I seen a good many garters," replied the woodsman, 'in the stores, an' I guess they was mostly oblong." "Did you ever see a solar plexus?" inquired the Doctor, severely. "Dozens of 'em.

A diseased state of the medulla spinalis, in that part which is contained in the canal, formed by the superior cervical vertebræ, and extending, as the disease proceeds, to the medulla oblongata.

"This property is characterized by being EXCITED in its action and REFLEX in its course: in every instance in which it is exerted an impression made upon the extremities of certain nerves is conveyed to the medulla oblongata or the medulla spinalis, and is reflected along the nerves to parts adjacent to, or remote from, that which has received the impression.

And the Outlaw rarely gallops, no longer butts, only periodically kicks, comes in to the pole and does her work without attempting to vivisect Maid's medulla oblongata, and marvel of marvels is really and truly getting lazy. But Prince remains the same incorrigible, loving and lovable rogue he has always been. And the country we've been over! The drives through Napa and Lake Counties!

The vaso-motor nerves have their governing centre in that upper portion of the spinal cord which is within the skull, the so-called medulla oblongata. When the spinal cord is divided, the vessels are cut off from the influence of this vaso-motor centre, and at once dilate, profoundly affecting the blood-current by doing so.

The brain is not a single organ, but rather a collection of organs, differing from one another in function even more than in situation, and among them only some are really concerned in the production of thought. 2d. In the medulla oblongata exists a nervous centre called the vaso-motor centre, because of its close relations with the vaso-motor nerves.

These centres are the central offices where the information is received and from which orders are issued, so to speak. The chief respiratory centre the centre is situated in that portion of the brain just above the spinal cord, in its continuation, in fact, and is known as the medulla oblongata, or bulb.
