"Nothing but the furniture that is floating around the rooms; though some of that has been washed out, and disappeared," Mazie told him. "Then we'll have to look around and see what can be done to make a raft. There are five of us boys, all stout enough to do our share of the work.
"Then come, let me help you down; and the boys in the boat will be there to do their part; after which we'll get the other girls aboard," and saying this Max proceeded to give Mazie his hand, so that she might creep down the slope of the roof securely.
Van Alen could not enter into their technical objections. He hoped it would not rain, because he wanted to take a book to Mazie Wetherell, and he had not brought a rain-coat. But it did rain, and he went without a rain-coat! The house, as he neared it, showed no light, and under the thick canopy of the trees there was no sound but the drip, drip of the rain.
One Saturday night he gave her a large bill, and the next morning she placed a neatly folded green-back on the collection plate as he held it out to her. He stood in the aisle and eyed the bill with suspicion. Then he deliberately unfolded it, and held out the plate to her again. "Come over, Mazie," he said. And Mazie came over with the balance. You know what a woman would have done.
"But didn't you explain things how 'twas, in the first place?" She shook her head. "I couldn't not with Mazie there. I said I'd come the next morning to to finish the book. I thought he'd understand I was going to explain then. He probably did and that's why he won't let me in. He doesn't want any explanations," sighed the girl tremulously. "Well, he ought to want 'em," asserted Susan with vigor.
She was to be a decoy. She knew nothing of Johnny's actions, but knew they were for the good of his country. How could she ask him to abandon them for her sake? As her eyes roamed about the room they fell upon the little Jap girl. In her face Mazie read black rage for the Russian, and a deep compassion for herself. "Come," said the Russian; "we are wasting time. Is it not so? You must write.
Good-bye." "Good-bye," said Keith. And Dorothy wondered if Mazie noticed that he quite omitted a polite "Come again," and if Mazie saw that as he said the terse "Good-bye" he put both hands suddenly and resolutely behind his back. Dorothy saw it, and at home, long hours later she was still crying over it. She went early to the Burtons' the next forenoon.
"Kind of funny-looking, though, isn't it?" commented Mazie. "Father'd love it, so'd Aunt Hattie," avowed Dorothy, evidently not slow to detect the lack of appreciation in Mazie's voice. "And I do, too," she finished, with a tinge of defiance. Mazie laughed. "Well, all right, you may, for all I care," she retorted.
He had looked up the official record that very morning and had seen that he was reported "Missing in Vladivostok; probably dead." Should he stick to the Russian's trail, a course which might lead to his death, or should he take the diamonds to a customs office and turn them in as smuggled goods, then tell Hanada he was off the hunt, was going back to his old job and Mazie?
And after a time he brought the conversation around to Mazie Wetherell. He found the boy rather sure of his success with her. "All women are alike," he said; "you've just got to keep after them long enough." To Van Alen the idea of this hulking youngster as a suitor for such a woman seemed preposterous. He was not fit to touch the hem of her garment.
