Certain it is that, in twenty-seven hours from the time that he left Msala on the morning of the great storm, he presented himself before Maurice Gordon in his office at the factory at Loango. "Ah!" cried Gordon, hardly noticing the washed-out, harassed appearance of the visitor; "here you are again. I heard that the great expedition had started."

He was a tall man with a small aristocratic head and a refined face, which somehow suggested an aristocrat of old France. "Yes," answered Durnovo. The tall man stepped ashore and held out his hand. "I am glad we have met you," he said; "I have a letter of introduction to you from Maurice Gordon, of Loango."

"How strange," said Lady Cantourne, "to think that you are actually living in Loango, and that you are the last person who has spoken to Jack Meredith! There are two people in this house to-night who would like to ask you questions from now till morning, but neither of them will do it. Did you see me go through the room just now with a tall gentleman rather old." "Yes," answered Jocelyn.

His efforts were ably seconded by his good lady, an exceedingly comely Gaboon woman, with pretty manners, and an excellent gift in cookery. The third member of the staff was the store-keeper, a clever fellow: I fancy a Loango from his clean-cut features and spare make, but his tribe I know not for a surety.

The dog is even more valued than the sheep for human subsistence, and is deemed the greatest luxury that can be placed even on the royal table. In Loango, or Lower Guinea, is a town from which the African wild dogs derive their name the 'dingo'. They hunt in large packs. They fearlessly attack even the elephant, and generally destroy him.

He could not take him to Loango. He could not risk that Jocelyn or even Maurice Gordon should look upon this horror. Joseph had crept back into the inner room, where he had no light, and could be heard breathing hard, wide awake in his hammock. Suddenly the silence was broken by a loud cry: "Oscard! Oscard!" In a moment Joseph and Oscard were at the bedside.

The Cape Negro of Battell, however, cannot be the modern Cape Negro in 16 degrees S., since Loango itself is in 4 degrees S. latitude. On the other hand, the "great river called Banna" corresponds very well with the "Camma" and "Fernand Vas," of modern geographers, which form a great delta on this part of the African coast.

But somehow it had got beyond his control. He had looked forward to a very different ending to the interview. And now he found himself returning somewhat disconsolately to the wretched hotel in Loango dismissed sent back. The next day he actually left the little West African coast town, turning his face northward with bad grace. Even at that distance, he feared Jack Meredith's half-veiled sarcasm.

What would be the national disgrace if he should be elected from one of the southern states, and a vile negro should come to rule over us? Treaties would then be formed with the tribes of Congo and Loango, instead of the civilized nations of Europe. But is there any security that he shall be a freeman?

Durnovo had only been allowed to come down to the coast under a promise, gracefully veiled, but distinct enough, that he should only remain twenty-four hours in Loango. Jocelyn avoided seeing him again. She was forced to forego the opportunity of hearing much that she wanted to learn because Durnovo, the source of the desired knowledge, was unsafe.
