It is here that the process of cleaning begins in earnest; and as the mass of rags is tumbled about in its scalding bath of steam-heated lime-water, or "milk of lime," the coloring and glutinous matters, as well as all other impurities, are loosened from the fibers, which are in the end so cleansed and purified as to come forth unstained and of virgin purity.

There it remains a day, and is then drawn off into a succession of boilers, where all the refuse is skimmed off. To turn it into grains, lime-water is poured into it; and when this makes it ferment, a small piece of tallow, the size of a nut, is thrown in. It is next drawn into pots to cool, with holes in the bottom through which the molasses drain off.

If to a water you suspect to be hard from presence of carbonate of lime or carbonate of iron in solution in carbonic acid, i.e. as bicarbonates, you add some clear lime-water, and a white precipitate is produced, you have a proof of carbonate of lime hardness. If the precipitate is brownish, you may have, also, carbonate of iron. I will now mention a very delicate test for iron.

Intestines slightly inflamed, stomach sometimes quite healthy. Treatment. Warm water, then chalk, carbonate of magnesium, or lime-water, freely. Not alkalies, as the oxalates of the alkalies are soluble and poisonous. Castor-oil. Emetics, but not stomach-pump. Fatal Dose. One drachm is the smallest, but half an ounce is usually fatal. Method of Extraction from the Stomach.

This is a substance made visible to us by its action, which is not the action of the lime-water either upon the oxygen or upon the nitrogen, nor upon the water itself, but it is something new to us from the candle.

Another valuable remedy for burns is "carron-oil;" which is made by mixing equal parts of linseed-oil and lime-water in a bottle, and shaking it up before using it. Cold applications, such as cold water, cold vinegar and water, and cold lotions, are most injurious, and, in many cases, even dangerous.

You will observe that, however long I draw the external air into the lime-water, and then through it to my lungs, I shall produce no effect upon the water it will not make the lime-water turbid; but if I throw the air from my lungs through the lime-water, several times in succession, you see how white and milky the water is getting, shewing the effect which expired air has had upon it; and now you begin to know that the atmosphere which we have spoiled by respiration is spoiled by carbonic acid, for you see it here in contact with the lime-water.

Those exported to China are sometimes shipped without being salted, although it is necessary that all those sent on so long a voyage as it is to Europe should undergo that process. Buffalo hide cuttings are generally prepared for shipment by being immersed in lime-water, from which they are withdrawn perfectly white and coated with lime.

Imagine a young woman, voluptuously lying on a divan, her head softly supported by a cushion, one hand hanging down; on a small table close at hand is her glass of lime-water. Now place by her side a burly husband.

If life has been preserved for some days, there is extensive fatty degeneration of the organs. There may be entire absence of post-mortem signs. Putrefaction of the body is retarded by arsenic. Treatment. The stomach-pump, emetics, then milk, milk and eggs, oil and lime-water. Inflammatory symptoms, collapse, coma, etc., must be treated on ordinary principles.
