Nowadays we get just as valuable pearls from the South Seas, and even from Panama, St. Margarita and the Caromandel Coast, as ever came from Ceylon. But only those of rare size, shape or color are now valued at high prices. For instance, a string of matched pearls such as that owned by Princess Lemoine is estimated as worth only eighty thousand dollars, because it could be quite easily duplicated.
Lemoine, for instance, was respectably married in his native island of Jersey, and had already threatened to disinherit a nephew who showed a tendency to dissipation. But Mr. Lemoine would not care to recognize Mr.
Georges lodged with a woman named Lemoine, who kept a fruiterer's shop in the Rue de la Montagne St. Genevieve, and on the evening of the 9th of March he had just left his lodging to go, it was said, to a perfumer's named Caron. It is difficult to suppose that the circumstance of the police being on the spot was the mere effect of chance.
The double-flowered varieties, for which we are much indebted to M. Victor Lemoine, of Nancy, are fast gaining favour with cultivators in this country, and rightly, too, for they include several very handsome, full flowered forms. The following are best known: S. vulgaris Alphonse Lavallee, with full double red flowers, changing to mauve.
The news tumbled from her lips in excited exclamations. "Oh, Father, guess! Mr. Lemoine saw a picture a Blackfoot woman had it old Makoye-kin's wife and she sold it. And he says it was like me exactly. Maybe it was my aunt or some one. My father's sister! Don't you think?" "I'll ken what I think better gin ye'll just quiet doon an' tell me a' aboot it, lass." She told him.
"It's nursin' you need, man, an' guid food. Ye'll get baith at the hoose." The trader protested, and was overruled. His Cree wife was not just now able to look after him. McRae's wife and daughter made good his promise, and the wounded man thrived under their care. On an afternoon Whaley lay on the bed in his room smoking. Beside him sat Lemoine, also puffing at a pipe.
Hisay, a poor deformed girl, who served the conspirators with tireless zeal, taking all sorts of disguises and vying in address and activity with Réal's men. She had rented from a fruitseller named Lemoine, a little shop with a room above it, intending "to use it for some of her acquaintances." It was there that she conducted Georges on the night of February 17.
Louis XV, who knew something of men when he chose to study them., was not slow in detecting the talent of Lemoine, and in consequence gave him that station in which de Broglie had been installed.
Part is already within the precincts; under the orders of General Lemoine. The Government has it at present in its power to elevate public spirit; but everybody feels that it is necessary the Directory should be surrounded by tried and energetic Republicans.
Berlioz used to come to these concerts with his friends, Damcke and Stephen Heller; and it was after one of these performances, when he had been very stirred by an adagio in the E flat quartette, that he burst out with, "What a man! The true founder of chamber-music concerts in Paris was M. Émile Lemoine, who started the society called La Trompette.
