The delicate fancy and feeling which play about L'Allegro and Il Penseroso never reappear, and form a strong contrast to the austere imaginings of his later poetical period.

But it is time to close these tedious precepts, and to furnish you with, what speaks plainer than any precept, a Specimen of the Art itself, in which several of them are embodied. L'Allegro. A Poem. By JOHN MILTON. No Printer's name.

" Hence, loathed Melancholy." However by the time "Jonson's learned sock" was on, her mechanical repetition had become animated, and she had restored herself to equanimity. When the clock struck nine, her auditor added his thanks, "In case we should not meet again thus, let me beg of my kind visitor to wear this ring in memory of one to whom she has brought a breath indeed from L'Allegro itself.

In these thirty lines we have the preluding mutterings of the storm which was to sweep away mask and revel and song, to inhibit the drama, and suppress poetry. In the earlier poems Milton's muse has sung in the tones of the age that is passing away; the poet is, except in his austere chastity, a cavalier. Though even in L'Allegro Dr. Johnson truly detects "some melancholy in his mirth."

What more inspiring or pleasing reading than some of Longfellow's poems, or the Vicar of Wakefield, or Milton's L'Allegro and Il Penseroso, or Saintine's Picciola, or selections from the poems of Holmes, Whittier, Kipling, or Lowell? For all these and similar wants, the library has an unfailing supply.

Four remarkable poems were written during his years of studious leisure at Horton, L'Allegro, Il Penseroso, Comus, and Lycidas. L'Allegro describes the charms of a merry social life, and Il Penseroso voices the quiet but deep enjoyment of the scholar in retirement. These two poems have been universal favourites.

And the lady blessed Evelyn, and felt that, if bereaved, she was not alone. BUT come, thou Goddess, fair and free, In heaven yclept Euphrosyne! To hear the lark begin his flight, And, singing, startle the dull night. L'Allegro. But come, thou Goddess, sage and holy, Come, divinest Melancholy! There held in holy passion still, Forget thyself to marble. Il Penseroso.

"Attacca subito l'Allegro." Alice had fallen on it suddenly. "I suppose," said Mary, "it's a relief to her to make that row." "It isn't," said Gwenda. "It's torture. That's how she works herself up. She's playing on her own nerves all the time. If she really could play If she cared about the music If she cared about anything on earth except " She paused.

It is impossible for anyone devoted to the study of "Paradise Lost," of "Comus," even of "Sampson Agonistes," and especially of "Il Pensoroso" and "L'Allegro," to doubt that their writer was carried away at times by the oestrum, or divine afflatus, although Dr Johnson discredits "these bursts of light, and involutions of darkness, these transient and involuntary excursions and retrocessions of invention."

While her sister's style was il penserono, hers was l'allegro; every imaginable thing, place, or person supplied food for her mirth, and her sister's lovers all came in for their share.
