We have seen that the first Madonnas were painted against a background either of solid gold, or of cherub figures, and that the latter style of setting was continued in the early pictures of the enthroned Madonna. The effect was to idealize the subject, and carry it into the region of the heavenly. This was the germinal idea which grew into the "Madonna in Gloria."
Few people are so immaterialistic that they can dispense with symbols; many can idealize symbols in which others see nothing but matter; and only those devoid of artistic perception deny the religious value of sculpture, painting, and music.
Such old maids attain to the highest heroism of their sex by consecrating all feminine feelings to the help of sorrow. She liked Comte first-rate, until he began to make love to her. Then his stock dropped below par. Comte was always much impressed by intellectual women. His wife had given him a sample of the other kind, and caused him to swing out and idealize the woman of brains. The master artist can idealize even our crude material, and make it serve.
In the ranking of the gods, however, these spirits of the house and of the field occupied the lowest rather than the highest place; it was and it could not be otherwise with a religion which renounced all attempts to idealize not the broadest and most general, but the simplest and most individual abstraction, in which the pious heart found most nourishment.
A few had left carelessly abandoning their unsalable goods to their landlord, with great cheerfulness and a sense of favor. Occasionally Mr. Abner Nott, in a practical relapse, raged against the derelicts, and talked of dispossessing them, or even dismantling his tenement, but he was easily placated by a compliment to the "dear old ship," or an effort made by some tenant to idealize his apartment.
"I mightn't have thought so much of this a month ago, but I have come to love the Senator almost as a son, and to think that he could be like the rest of that bunch is awful." "You are too much of an idealist, Mr. Haines," said the girl. "And you? What do you think of it?" he demanded. The girl's glance wavered. "Don't idealize me too much, either, Mr. Haines. I didn't think it was much.
