Whilst poor Raymond thus indulged himself in the caprices of a benevolent imagination, his mother was hastening to the house of Mr. Hickman, the former agent of the Castle Cumber property, with the intention of rendering an act of justice to an individual and a family whom she had assisted deeply and cruelly to injure.
Hickman will neither say any thing to keep one awake, nor yet, by shocking adventures, make one's slumbers uneasy. I believe I now know which of the two men so prudent a person as you would, at first, have chosen; nor doubt I that you can guess which I would have made choice of, if I might.
The first likelihood that appears to me of encouragement, I dismiss Hickman, that's certain. If my mother disoblige me in so important an article, I shan't think of obliging her in such another. It is impossible, surely, that the desire of popping me off to that honest man can be with such a view. I repeat, that it cannot come to any thing.
Excuse this plainness, my Lord, it is well meant and void of intentional offence. "I shall be ready in a few days to deliver all books, papers, documents, &c, connected With the property, to any person duly authorized by your Lordship to receive them. "I have the honor to be, &c, "Henby Hickman." The Right Honorable Lord Cumber to Valentine M'Clutchy: Doncaster, April, 18
A pretty plea to a beloved object in the plenitude of her power! As much as to say, 'Greatly I value you, Madam, I will not take pains to curb my passions to oblige you' Methinks I should be glad to hear from Mr. Hickman such a plea for good nature as this. Indeed, we are too apt to make allowances for such tempers as early indulgence has made uncontroulable; and therefore habitually evil.
Also we pray you as occasion shall serue that you ayd and helpe our factours, both with your counsell and otherwise; and thus God send you safely to returne. William Gerrard, William Winter, Beniamin Gonson, Anthony Hickman, Edward Castelin.

He descended to the cellar of the stable, and then, by the way he had come, reached the kitchen, and then the parlor, at the door of which the planter was fortified. "Anything new, Colonel Hickman?" he asked. "Yes, indeed!" exclaimed the sentinel over the staircase. "What have you been doing outside? Something has happened."
But to be cajoled, wire-drawn, and ensnared, like silly birds, into a state of bondage, or vile subordination; to be courted as princesses for a few weeks, in order to be treated as slaves for the rest of our lives. Indeed, my dear, as you say of Solmes, I cannot endure them! Mr. Hickman shall sound Lord M. upon the subject you recommend.
"Perhaps I know more about that affair than you do, Colonel Hickman; for my name is Lyon, and I happen to be the officer to whom you allude," replied Deck, looking at the ground. "Lieutenant Lyon! Is it possible?" exclaimed the planter, taking the young man's hand again. "But we will not talk about things that are passed and gone, Colonel," interposed the young officer.
