Hart's command held its position about the slopes of Inniskilling Hill and in the gorge of the river. All was now ready for the final attack on the left of the Pieters position, and in spite of the high quality of the Infantry it was generally recognised throughout the army that the fate of Ladysmith must depend on the success of the next day's operations.

Hill himself was taking his chances, and he blame well knowed it, every day. But it was the sense of the meeting that if a hold-up of that coach attended by fatalities was coming, it couldn't come at a better time than when Hart's nephew was on the box the feeling being general that Hart's nephew was one that could be spared.

It happened to be one of Robert Hart's favourites, but beyond feeling pleasure that this particular hymn should have been chosen, the incident made no great impression on him at the time. As soon as the service was over, he went to shake hands with the Bishop. Russell, however, was obliged to hurry away to address a Chinese meeting; there was scarcely a moment for talk then.

Trenches and some breastworks covered all the approaches by which the Boers might look for an attack, and as the whole mountain was covered with huge boulders, they were able to withstand even the storm of lyddite shell that was poured upon them. On the following day Hart's brigade received orders to advance towards Colenso.

Before the Hen got done with him he was about the sickest man, Hart's nephew was, you ever seen! But I guess it learned him quite a little about how when he talked to ladies he'd better be polite. Fun wasn't no name that night for that Hen!

For a discussion of narrative verse in general, see Gummere's Poetics and Oldest English Epic, Hart's Epic and Ballad, Council's Study of Poetry, and Matthew Arnold's essay "On Translating Homer." Mod. Lang. Ass., vol. 21, 1906. All handbooks on Poetics discuss the Ode. Gosse's English Odes and William Sharp's Great Odes are good collections.

In May 1863 Lay returned to Shanghai, and, Robert Hart's acting appointment having come to an end, he was made Commissioner at Shanghai, with charge of the Yangtsze ports, the position being specially created for him by Prince Kung in order to give him more authority than would belong to the simple Commissioner of a port. That same autumn the Sherard Osborne affair came to a crisis.

Colonel Kitchener's Brigade pressed on towards Hart's Hill, which on the side by which they now attacked was far less formidable than that against which the Irish had dashed themselves. It had never entered the Boer's minds that they would be attacked from this side, and their most formidable entrenchments had all been placed to resist an assault from Colenso.

When things was settled, all quick that way, Hart's nephew took to squirming he seeing, drunk as he was, he'd bit off a blame sight more'n he cared to chew. But with the Hen right after him and Hill and all the rest of the boys backing her, they being sure she'd dandy cards up her sleeve for the queer game she was playing he couldn't make nothing by all his squirms.

Hart's recollection of his early days in Cleveland, was the general turning out of the people to receive and welcome the father of internal improvements.
