They are but its outward manifestations, spontaneous as the water from the earth as it bursts forth a natural fountain. We must not fail also to notice the effect of this life upon one's manners and bearing. True politeness comes from a life founded upon this great principle, and from this alone. This gives the true gentleman, gentle-man, a man gentle, kind, loving, courteous from nature.

But nowadays we want a man with the same reliability as the upright type, but with grace and suppleness in place of rigidity; and with the same strength as the super-man, but with gentleness and consideration in proportion to the strength. He laughed much, was always ready to give and take jokes and hard knocks, had a squeaky, changing voice, a small head, big ears and was always what Thackeray called "a gentle-man." Such was Abraham Lincoln at fifteen. He was never cruel, mean, or unkind.

Unfortunately most of the Fresno grove has been cut and flumed down to the railroad near Madera. Mr. Clark was truly and literally a gentle-man. I never heard him utter a hasty, angry, fault-finding word.

It preferred instead to give minute instructions with regard to the eating of asparagus. In this dilemma he consulted Jernshaw. "Don't know, I'm sure," said that gentle-man; "besides, it doesn't matter." "Doesn't matter?" repeated Mr. Barrett. "Why not?" "Because I think Tillett is paying her attentions," was the reply.
