It is a good enough proof on the first face of it that consumption is catching. There is a large hospital here for Portuguese patients, though the disease was unknown before the English made a health resort of it. Funchal has been a thousand times described, and is well worthy of it.

A week's odd moments of study and enforced intercourse with waiters and male chambermaids, whose French was even more primitive than my own, had taught me a little Portuguese, that curious, unbeautiful sounding tongue, and I found it useful even on board the steamer. At anyrate I was able to interpret for a Funchal lawyer who sat by me at table, and afterwards invited me to see him.

But, whilst we have been reflecting together, my reader and I, Arthur was making his way to Madeira, so we may as well all come to a halt off Funchal. Very shortly after the vessel had dropped her anchor, Arthur was greeted by his friend, the manager of "Miles' Hotel." "Glad to see you, sir, though I can't say that you look well. I scarcely expected to find anybody for us at this time of year.

"Fine, fine; oh, fine as gold!" murmured Condy, under his breath. "Well," said the mate, getting up and rubbing his knee, "that's the story. Now you know all about that picture. Will you have a glass of Madeira, miss?" He got out a bottle of wine bearing the genuine Funchal label and filled three tiny glasses. Travis pushed up her veil, and she and Condy rose.

Here are two Letters which give reasonably good account of him: "To Thomas Carlyle, Esq., Chelsea, London. "FUNCHAL, MADEIRA, 16th November, 1837. "MY DEAR CARLYLE, I have been writing a good many letters all in a batch, to go by the same opportunity; and I am thoroughly weary of writing the same things over and over again to different people.

Beyond the Squire's is the hotel, approached by a shady avenue: it is the most comfortable in the island after the four of Funchal. The first is at Santa Anna, some 20 miles north-north-east of the capital; the second at Sao Vicente, to the north-west. All three are kept by natives of Madeira.

No such soothing potency lay in any wine ever pressed from the grapes of Funchal; but it was inexplicably pleasant, and surrender grew beyond any power of its questioning or combatting. Gradually, agreeably the two of them were sinking below the surface of consciousness. Soon they would be submerged. Then in a moment of partial realization, Conscience said: "I think I had better go upstairs.

The solicitor addressed me as he descended the stair. "You, madam," said he, "are cleared from all blame; your uncle will be glad to hear it if indeed he should be still living when Mr. Mason returns to Madeira." "My uncle? What of him? Do you know him?" "Mr. Mason does; Mr. Eyre has been the Funchal correspondent of his house for some years.

This latter island was only inhabited within the last twenty-four years, when the prince appointed two of his gentlemen to be its governors. Tristan Vaz having the government of that half of the island in which the port of Monchrico is situated; and the other district of the island, in which Fonzal, Fonchial, or Funchal stands, is under the government of John Gonzales Zarcho.

He first touched at Porto Santo, where, if the story of his residence there be true, there must have been potent memories for him in the sight of the long white beach and the plantations, with the Governor's house beyond. He stayed there only a few hours and then crossed over to Madeira, anchoring in the Bay of Funchal, where he took in wood and water.
