As I plodded slowly up the steep slope I heard loud reports, as though some one were setting off heavy blasts. They echoed and reëchoed among the cliffs. A roaring stream dashed frothily down the slope, rocks rolled past. I climbed a pinnacle overlooking the glacier and looked down upon it. The Parson was right. All the snow which ordinarily hid the icy surface was melted away.

Half a mile away, at its farther end, the surf leaped frothily over a bar, and beyond that the open sea tumbled and flashed in the first sun-rays. It was idyllic and on our left a mere stone's throw, it seemed, behind the embowering forest, the mountain of our quest thrust a treeless, grassy shoulder into the blue. Mr. L , however, warned us that our way was still long and circuitous.

I went before breakfast to the beach and was surprised to find her there watching the tide coming in; in a moment of extreme indulgence her mother, or her people, had allowed her to run down to look at the sea for a minute by herself. She was standing on the shingle, watching the green waves break frothily at her feet, her pale face transfigured with a gladness which seemed almost unearthly.

Here floweth all blood putridly and tepidly and frothily through all veins: spit on the great city, which is the great slum where all the scum frotheth together! Spit on the city of compressed souls and slender breasts, of pointed eyes and sticky fingers On the city of the obtrusive, the brazen-faced, the pen-demagogues and tongue-demagogues, the overheated ambitious:

Make this man Brooker a prisoner at large for the present, and fall in the picket." The Sergeant saluted. "Very good, sir." The bubbling Brooker boiled over frothily as the sentries were changing. "A prisoner! Good God! do they take me for a traitor? A Magistrate ... an Alderman, the President of the Gas Committee ..."

His emotion-taut face loosened suddenly, seemed to run like melted wax, and congealed again in an expression of utter idiocy. He gargled frothily, and then screamed high and shrill, like a tortured woman. Suddenly he was a lunging maniac, tearing up the street.

Upon close inspection I was not mistaken. But could this sad thoughtful countenance be the same vacant face of folly which I had hailed so often under circumstances of gaiety; which I had never seen without a smile, or recognised but as the usher of mirth; that looked out so formally flat in Foppington, so frothily pert in Tattle, so impotently busy in Backbite; so blankly divested of all meaning, or resolutely expressive of none, in Acres, in Fribble, and a thousand agreeable impertinences?

But she meant well, and Finn suffered her head-pattings more gladly than those of the rest of the household, recognizing clearly in her just about what there was to recognize, and rightly appreciating that simple character, as being of greater worth than the frothily pretentious nature of her daughters.

"I don't give a damn about your cane," burbled my new captor frothily, his pink evil eyes swelling with wrath. "I'm staying," I replied calmly, and sat down on a curb, in the midst of my ponderous trinkets. A crowd of gendarmes gathered. "Very well, gentlemen," I said. "You will allow me to tell you something."
