She was running now on frightened feet, Jasper having hard work to keep up with her, and the two dashed through the little gate in the hedge where Phronsie was accustomed to let herself through on the only walk she was ever allowed to take alone, and into the house where Polly cried to the first person she met, "Where's Phronsie?" to be met with what she dreaded, "Gone over to Helen Fargo's."
They left Lounsbury fuming in the road, and they had a rather enjoyable ten minutes searching through Fargo's stock for suitable garb. He selected a pair of slicker pants to wear over riding trousers, a coat lined with sheepskin, boy's size, and an awkwardly made but effective rubber coat for outside wear when the snow lay on the branches.
It is said that he was engaged in the late robbery of Wells & Fargo's express at Grizzly Bend, and that he was an habitual gambler. Only one thing about him is certainly well known: he was a lieutenant in the Confederate army, and served under General Price and the outlaw Quantrell.
"Fargo's is the place to go to," said Shocker, presently. "I know we can trust him." "Of course, I don't want to hurt Porter," said Nat, nervously. "I only want to scare him." "Sure, I understand. We'll scare the wits out of him," returned Tom Shocker. "Now, let me see. I have it we'll catch him on the bridge. His carriage is bound to come that way, to get off Goat Island."
Then I'll tell you. Send the money to Lock Box 47, Green Springs P. O., per Wells Fargo's Express, and I'll get it there, on account of my parents not knowing. We're very high-toned, and they would think it's low making poetry for papers. Send amount usually paid for poetry in your papers. Or may be you think I make poetry for nothing? That's where you slip up! Yours truly,
There were three stages a day, each way, and I have seen the out-going stages carry away a third of a ton of bullion each, and more than once I saw them divide a two-ton lot and take it off. Valentine, Wells Fargo's agent, has handled all the bullion shipped through the Virginia office for many a month.
Then she clambered into bed, and lay looking out across the moonlight, where the light from Helen Fargo's room twinkled through the fir-trees on the lawn. "I can't tell her," groaned Mrs. Pepper, the next morning, at sight of Phronsie's peaceful little face. "I never can say the word 'diphtheria' in all this world."
"Hold on!" said a dozen voices. A dozen hands were thrust into a dozen pockets; I grieve to say some were regretfully withdrawn empty, for it was a hard season in Rough and Ready. But the expressman stepped before them, with warning, uplifted hand. "Not a cent, boys, not a cent! Wells, Fargo's Express Company don't undertake to carry bullion with those kids, at least on the same contract!"
He and Jim Bailey knew each other well, for he had often come that way, always with his box and his rifle. He was Wells Fargo's messenger and his name was Danny Leonard. In the box at his feet were twelve thousand dollars in coin to be delivered that night to the Greenhide Mine at Antelope. With nothing of interest in sight, talk between them was desultory.
A stranger spoke from the other side of the fire. "How's Grizzly River?" he asked. Bill turned to him with a smile. "Getting higher and higher. All the streams are up. You know that bald-faced bay of Fargo's?" Fargo was the Bradleyburg merchant, and the stranger knew the horse, one of the little band that, after the frontier custom, Fargo kept to rent. "Yes, I remember him."
