This is one of the words of God to you. Another word of God is this. The way of the cross, said severe Evangelist, is odious to every worldly-wise man; while, all the time, it is the only way there is, and there never will be any other way to eternal life. The only way to life is the way of the cross.

The cruelty of Archelaus's character, which is not obscurely intimated by the evangelist, agrees with divers particulars in his history preserved by Josephus: "In the tenth year of his government, the chief of the Jews and Samaritans, not being able to endure his cruelty and tyranny, presented complaints against him to Caesar."

Yet such is the language used to express his situation at that time, and afterwards on a similar occasion.* The three disciples, who witnessed the transfiguration, experienced similar sensations sensations which absorbed the soul, and shut out terrestrial objects, which the evangelist compares to sleep. * Daniel viii. 18, x. 9.

He began to perceive that her awe of him had kept her silent, thus concealing from him the spirit of the evangelist which he now saw she possessed. She counted more largely in Viola's development than he had hitherto granted. Her faith was solidly based on years of experience and was not to be easily moved.

Hence, in the foregoing account of a possible democratic fulfillment, attention has been concentrated on that indispensable phase of the work which can be attained by conscious means. Until this work is measurably accomplished no evangelist can do more than convert a few men for a few years.

Living in a real world and deeply impressed with the needs of the people, he had no time to devote to any literary work, though he might have rendered some service by his pen to the cause of Christ, but modesty barred the way, and he was above everything else a pioneer evangelist.

Only an artistic hand could have written these stories, and they will make delightful reading. Evangelist, N. Y. The simplicity, purity, and quaintness of those stories set them apart in a niche of distinction, where they have no rivals. Literary World, Boston. The reader who buys this book and reads it will find treble his money's worth in every one of the delightful stories. Chicago Journal.

"He needs the sleep," she said and hurried past the minister and out of the church, looking ahead of her and frowning. The evening of the evangelist meeting was a summer evening fallen on a winter month. All day the warm winds had come up from the southwest. Mud lay soft and deep in the streets and among the little pools of water on the sidewalks were dry spots from which steam arose.

Homer is complete and calm enough; it is his critics who tear him into extravagant tatters. Shakespeare is quite himself; it is only some of his critics who have discovered that he was somebody else. And though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature so wild as one of his own commentators. The general fact is simple.

The strong but overwrought Evangelist, Sapho which of course belongs with the chief novels from the Continental but not from the insular point of view and the books of Daudet's decadence, The Immortal, and the rest, cost him few friendships, but scarcely gained him many. For the man and his career are as unaffectedly charming as his style, and more of a piece than his elaborate works of fiction.
