The birds and beasts kangaroo, platypus, emu are ancient types, rough grotesques of Nature, sketching as a child draws. The natives were a race without a history, far more antique than Egypt, nearer the beginnings than any other people. Their weapons are the most primitive: those of the extinct Tasmanians were actually palaeolithic.
The boat was a large gig, pulled by six oars. She came in, we thought, to reconnoitre. "Now, what do you think of seizing the boat, and holding the people as hostages till they deliver up the ladies?" exclaimed Fairburn. "If she is honest, we shall run the risk of being accused of committing an act of piracy; but if she is the Emu, our object may thus easily be obtained."
The natives stayed at Appatinna, as they had too much emu to leave. We did not want them, and were just as well pleased they did not come on. Mr. Gosse's track went North-North-East to the Hamilton River from Appatinna. 26th.
He throws the stone on one side, has a feed of emu eggs, and goes off, leaving poor Moorunglely, the sitting emu, to come back and find her eggs all destroyed.
He was lolling back in an easy chair, with a cigar in his mouth, a jug and tumbler, containing some potent mixture, by his side, and account books and papers before him. "Were you the consignee of the Emu brig, which sailed from here last year, and has not since been heard of?" "Well, if I was, and what then?" said he. "I wish to know full particulars about her," I replied.
I will now give the signal and return to my post here." The Emu then ran at a great pace along the edge of the plain, and emitted a strange rattling cry. After disappearing from sight for a time, it returned hurriedly to where Dot and her friend were waiting. "Now, see!" said the Emu, nodding at the distant side of the plain.
I obtained seeds, and also packed some of its fleshy, tuberous roots in a tin case. We saw but few wallabies; and not one kangaroo or emu had as yet been seen by any of the party. The country was not open enough for them to inhabit. July 7. We started at daylight, proceeding over open forest ground covered with long grass, very thick and luxuriant.
Here again I was fortunate in shooting an emu, a welcome addition to our provisions. From them we got the news which we already suspected that a new find of gold had been made not five miles from the rocks. An apparently rich find too! How strangely things turn out.
As I had had a fair education, and knew that I could master navigation, I expected without difficulty to work my way up till I became an officer, and then to have the command of such a fine ship myself, just such a one as the "Emu." But how was I to get to sea?
As both Dot and the Kangaroo were thirsty, they asked the Emu the way to a waterhole or tank. "I am going to a tank now," replied the Emu; "let us proceed together." "Do you think it will be safe to drink to-night;" enquired the Kangaroo anxiously. "Well, to tell the truth," said the Emu lightly, "it is likely to be a little difficult.
