It was an attractive scene, and would have been entirely pleasant but for the painful contrast afforded by some eight or ten poor little mites with shaven heads and drab-coloured dresses, almost ragged and quite unadorned.
Clean-shaven, with a short bulldog pipe in the corner of his mouth, a billycock hat set rather jauntily on his head, a short, drab-coloured overcoat of horsy cut, black and white check trousers, red-skin riding gloves, square-toed walking shoes, a light cane, and a rose in his buttonhole; you would have taken him at first sight for a sporting tipster.
And much Man cared! The seas were his, and their islands; he had his frigates for the taking, his pirates and their hoards for an unregarded cutlass-stroke or two; and there were Princesses in plenty waiting for him somewhere Princesses of the right sort. He turned, swiftly, and ran through the crowd, and in a moment had disappeared like a small drab-coloured city chameleon. Rose-Marie, standing by the bench, watched the place where he had disappeared. Some of them were ajar, and the novice glanced into them with tingling nerves.
Bless their honest hearts! jurymen do indeed relieve the drab-coloured look of every-day life they come out in strong colour from the sombre tints of common-place events and people.
At one o'clock that afternoon a big drab-coloured touring-car filled with British naval officers tore up the Place de Meir, its horn sounding a hoarse warning, took the turn into the narrow Marche aux Souliers on two wheels, and drew up in front of the hotel.
One side of the ground was crowded by pretty women in lovely gowns, and on the other side the natives sat in their hundreds and chattered, not the drab-coloured crowd we produce, but gay and striking as a bed of tulips. There are three stands one for the members of the Turf Club, one for the ordinary public, and one for the natives who can afford a seat.
It felt like Sunday in England, and I shrank from it. I could see none of the Italians. The factory stood there, raw and large and sombre, by the stream, and the drab-coloured stone tenements were close by. Otherwise the village was a straggling Swiss street, almost untouched. The landlord was quiet and reasonable, even friendly, in the morning.
