I have thought over my late articles, and I really can scarcely call to mind a single sentence in any one of them which might not have been written at Calcutta as easily as in London. Perhaps in India I might not have the means of detecting two or three of the false dates in Croker's Boswell. But that would have been all.

Mary had evidently heard much of Mrs Baggett's virtues, and infirmities, and seemed to understand that she also had in many things to place herself under Mrs Baggett's orders. "Lord love you, Miss Mary," she was heard to say; "as if we did not all understand that you was to be missus of everything at Croker's Hall," for such was the name of Mr Whittlestaff's house.

I honestly believe that drink is the greatest curse of the day, except, of course. civil service, and that it has driven more young men to ruin than anything except civil service examinations. Look at the great leaders of Tammany Hall! No regular drinkers among them. Richard Croker's strongest drink was vichy.
