In Africa, I have seen every thing but Timbuctoo; and, in America, everything except Croker's Mountains."
Of complexion it can hardly be said that she had any; so little was the appearance of her countenance diversified by a change of hue. If I am bound to declare her colour, I must, in truth, say that she was brown. There was none even of that flying hue which is supposed to be intended when a woman is called a brunette. When she first came to Croker's Hall, health produced no variation.
I could not keep my eyes dry all day; nor can I now in the recollecting it; but let me pass over what to mourn is now so vain. Mme. D'Arblay's Diary, ii. 333-339. Croker's Boswell, p. 427, Dr. Johnson calls Thomas Johnson 'cousin, and says that in the last sixteen months he had given him £40. He mentions his death in 1779. Piozzi Letters, ii. 45.
Croker's note pointed it out to us, we had never noticed it, and of which we are quite sure that the meaning would never be discovered by any of those for whose sake books are expurgated, is altogether omitted. In another place, a coarse and stupid jest of Dr.

There was something, I know not what, awanting to the cheerfulness of the party. And "Silence like a heavy cloud, O'er all the warriors hung." If the general report of Croker's retiring be accurate, it may account for this. April 22. Sophia left this to take down poor Johnnie to Brighton. I fear I fear but we must hope the best. Anne went with her sister.
D'Arblay's Diary, ii. 293, 5. 'I snatch, he wrote a few weeks later, 'every lucid interval, and animate myself with such amusements as the time offers. Piozzi Letters, ii. 349. He had written to her on Nov. 10. See Croker's Boswell, p. 742. In 1756-7 they were all taken down. Dodsley's London and its Environs, ed. 1761, iv. 136-143. In Lowndes's Bibl.
Croker says that 'the real state of the case was that he had gone mad, and was in that state sent home. He died before the sentence of the court-martial was promulgated. Croker's Boswell, p. 497.
