The leader of the indignant church-members was Susan Henry; a mulatto woman of a very independent turn of mind. She prided herself that she never worked in anybody's house but her own, and this immunity from outside service gave her a certain pre-eminence among her sisters.
The Wades were very strict church-members. Such a thing as card playing was not to be thought of, and dancing was just as bad. Both were worldly amusements whose feet took hold on hell. We have lost this strictness now, and sometimes I wonder if we have not lost our religion too. The Wades were certainly religious that is the Governor and Mrs. Wade.
"Why, Jools, my dear friend, you know," said the shamefaced parson, "I never visit on Sundays." "Never w'at?" asked the astounded Creole. "No," said Jones, smiling awkwardly. "Never visite?" On the other hand, the churches are filled with persons who in spirit are nothing but skeptics and infidels.
Thus I was taken and paraded up Fifth Avenue, doing my part of the duties of Good Society. And all church-members go through this same performance; the oldest and most venerable of them steal potatoes and throw mud all week and then take a hot bath of repentance and put on the clean clothing of piety.
"I kin but grieve ter hear how my nevy Lee-yander hev 'prospered, ez ye call it, an' I be s'prised ye should gin it such a name. Oh-h-h, Sister Sudley!" in prolonged and dreary vocative, "I 'lowed ye war a godly woman. I knowed yer name 'mongst the church-goers an' the church-members."
The number of Northern church-members who buy the cotton, sugar, rice, tobacco, oranges, pine-apples, figs, ginger, cocoa, melons, and a thousand other things, raised by slave-labor.
Thin cakes of unleavened bread were specially prepared for this sacred service. Again and again were the tables refilled with communicants, for often seven hundred church-members were present. Thus the services were prolonged from early morning until nightfall.
