With birds, as with some other bipeds, the shortest way to the heart is through the stomach, and a choke-cherry tree in full blaze of fruit is always a natural aviary. Where a cedar bird has built its nest, there look some day to see a group of cherry trees; where convenient fence-perches along the roadside lead past cedar groves, there hope before long to see a bird-planted avenue of cedars.
There was a cool spring in the dry creek bed near by, well hidden by a clump of choke-cherry bushes, and she turned thither to cool her thirsty throat. In the depths of the ravine her eye caught a familiar footprint the track of a doe with the young fawn beside it. The hunting instinct arose within. "It will be a great feat if I can find and take from her the babe.
Choke-cherry ain't no good; but Black-cherry bark's awful good for lung complaint. Grandma always keeps it. So she and Yan planned an expedition together. The boldness of it scared the boy. The girl helped herself to a hatchet in the tool box the sacred tool box of his father. Yan's mother saw her with it and demanded why she had it.
Just choke-cherry trees, and service-berries, and now and then a little flat filled with cottonwoods and willows familiar trees and bushes that he had known all his six years of life. A horseman rode quietly up to them from behind a thicket of choke-cherry bushes. Pink, catching sight of him first, stopped short off and stared. "Hello, boys," greeted the new-comer gaily. "How's everything? Mamma! it's good to get amongst white folks again." The Happy Family rose up as one man and stared fixedly; not one of them spoke, or moved. Pink was the first to recover.

Before camping we landed and took on board Captain Clark, with the meat he had collected during this day's hunt, which consisted of one deer and an elk; we had, ourselves, shot a deer and an antelope."
The reason given for the change was that "It takes a man to govern boys." Other reasons, however, could be heard in the undercurrent of talk. The first Sunday after he heard of it, Rupert found Miss Wilton, and together they walked up the canyon road. It was a dull, cloudy day, and not a breath moved the odorous choke-cherry bushes which lined the dusty road.
There are already signs of an internecine fight with the devil-grass, which has intrenched itself in a considerable portion of my garden-patch. It contests the ground inch by inch; and digging it out is very much such labor as eating a piece of choke-cherry pie with the stones all in. It is work, too, that I know by experience I shall have to do alone.
When the snow melted the earth was covered with the fallen leaves of the last year, and already it was green with the strawberry plant and the bursting buds of the gooseberry, raspberry, and rose bushes, soon variegated by the rose and the blossoms of the choke-cherry.
A week or two longer and she would have shared the great secret, but something took place to end their comradeship. Lung Balm One day as this girl went with him through a little grove on the edge of the town, she stopped at a certain tree and said: "If that ain't Black-cherry!" "You mean Choke-cherry." "No, Black-cherry.
