For a moment or two Muffat thought of questioning Mme Bron; then he grew afraid lest Nana should get wind of his presence and escape by way of the boulevard. So he went on the march again and determined to wait till he was turned out at the closing of the gates, an event which had happened on two previous occasions.
And a shower of spikes tore the invading ranks apart. Odin saw a white-skinned warrior go to his knees and scream as he tried to pull a six-inch spike from his eye. Ato had ordered his men to try for Grim Hagen's trained soldiers first. Odin saw an old Bron cast a home-made spear with as much ease as a trained javelin-thrower back home.
Then his friend Derec came hesitantly in the door and looked at him remorsefully. He wrung his hands. "I had to do it, Bron," he said agitatedly. "I couldn't help doing it!" Hoddan blinked at him. He was dazed. Things didn't become clearer when he saw that a cop had slit open his pillow and was sifting its contents through his fingers.
When frantic bangings on the propped-shut door awakened him next morning, he confusedly imagined that they were noises in the communicator headphones, and until he heard his name called tried drearily to make sense of them. But suddenly he opened his eyes. Somebody banged on the door once more. A voice cried angrily: "Bron Hoddan! Wake up or I'll go away and let whatever happens to you happen!
You used the science that your people stole from us to cheat me of my bride and my slave." Gunnar had heard enough. The huge sword flashed in a circle as he swung it above his head with both hands. A Bron stepped forward and Gunnar slashed him from shoulder to stomach-pit. Odin thrust Maya to the couch as he came forward to help. But Grim Hagen had merely stepped back.
Would the worlds out there become mere plundered planets with a portion of the aborigines' land grudgingly set apart for reservations? Of course, Grim Hagen was a Bron one of the worst of them. But Brons and men had lived so close together for so long that there was little difference between them. Odin knew some men who, given the ship and the weapons, would have done as Grim Hagen had done.
People all over the planet would start doing research, hoping to satisfy all their grudges by committing suicide for all their enemies with themselves! For the sake of civilization your secret has to be suppressed and you with it. It's terrible for you, Bron, but there's nothing else to do!" Hoddan said dazedly: "But I only have to put up a bond to be released!"
Grim Hagen's face was almost blue with rage. "You have said enough. And there are other ways to make you talk. Make these swine prisoners," he screamed. A dozen knives flashed. A dozen death-tubes were pointed toward Ato and his followers. But one of Grim Hagen's lieutenants, a Bron who was now silver-haired, intervened. "No, Grim Hagen. They are under truce. The week is not yet up.
Yo'll tak' th' dish and put it into th' hot waiter, and then tak' dish-cloth and rub it raand and raand, insoide and aatsoide, till it's clean, and then yo'll wipe it wi' a clean towel, and mak' it look just loike a bron new dish; and that's haa th' Lord does wi' a poor sinner: He gies him a plunge into th' Gospel fountain, weshes all his sins away, and brings him aat a bron new man."
It was all very gay, and Nana was becoming absorbed in contemplation, when it struck her someone had knocked at the door. She turned round and shouted: "Come in!" At sight of the count she shut the window, for it was not warm, and there was no need for the eavesdropping Mme Bron to listen. The pair gazed at one another gravely.
