By the first of May, Brenton's lectures had made themselves one of the features of the college world; but, by the same token, they had ceased to be lectures upon chemistry, and had become harangues upon every phase of the allied sciences, harangues which ran through the entire gamut of abstract investigation, and came to rest at last upon the pair of finite questions: Whence? and Whither?
To be sure, Dolph had never had the habit of calling upon Brenton. From the first, his liking for the man had been a temperate one, a liking mitigated by his own regrets concerning the nature of Brenton's sense of humour. Moreover, he shied a little bit at Brenton's priestly calling, shied a little bit more at the idea of coming into closer quarters with Brenton's wife.
"You are what the material world calls dead, although in reality you have just begun to live." "And who are you?" asked Brenton. "And how did you get in here?" The other smiled. "How did you get in here?" he said, repeating Brenton's words. "I? Why, this is my own house." "Was, you mean." "I mean that it is. I am in my own house. This lady is my wife." "Was," said the other.
AS the night closed in, the wind rose steadily, still blowing from the southwest. In Brenton's kitchen they found a group round a great fire of driftwood; some of these were fishermen who had with difficulty made a landing on the beach, and who confirmed the accounts already given.
The resolution being taken to proceed against Rhode Island, the fleet got under way, and, on the 25th of July, appeared off Newport, and cast anchor about five miles from that place, just without Brenton's ledge; soon after which, General Sullivan went on board the Admiral, and concerted with him a plan of operations for the allied forces.
But the doctor was not to be put off with mere evasions. He pressed his question mercilessly, hating himself acutely, all the while. "You saw her, as the nurse says, when she first came out of her room, this morning?" "Yes." Brenton's voice had lost its resonance and sounded curiously listless, as he answered. "Yes, I saw her then, and urged her not to go."
There could be no question even of a considerably crippled attacking ship reaching her destined position, and when once confused with the enemy's line, the shore batteries would be neutralized. The work on Rose Island certainly, that on Brenton's Point probably, had less height than the two upper batteries of a ship-of-the-line, and could be vastly outnumbered.
"Sixty fathom of two-inch chain, and old Joe talks about parting." "Foolish, of course," said Philip; "but it's a dangerous shore." "That's so," was the answer. "Never saw so many lines of reef show outside, neither." "There's an old saying on this shore," said Joe: "When Price's Neck goes to Brenton's Reef, Body and soul will come to grief.
Determination of Sir James to attack the combined squadron. Cæsar rehoists the Admiral's flag. Sir J. Brenton's description of that interesting scene. His account of the battle. Destruction of two Spanish three-deckers. Capture of the St. Antonio. Action between the Venerable and Formidable. Public letters. Private letters. French details of the battle. Spanish ditto. Orders of sailing. Remarks.
By the way, I hear that your ex-curate has been tackling your wife." "No!" "A fact. The boy told me. She started out to tackle him, and he clinched with her. I must say it was plucky of him, even if it didn't appear to do much good." Brenton's gray eyes clouded. "The only question is: what is good," he said thoughtfully. "No question about it," the doctor blustered.
