"Oh, just take and sharpen a good bread-knife," said Dapplegrim, "and do as if you were going to cut in two the third loaf on the left hand of those four loaves which are lying on the dresser in the king's kitchen, and you'll find her soon enough."
An' I dreamed that little she-devil come up on you when you was asleep, took a big bread-knife, an' cut your head plumb off! Yessir, I could see her holdin' up that head o' yourn, an' the blood was drippin', an' she was a-laughin' " "SHUT UP!" Keith fairly yelled the words. His eyes blazed. His face was dead white. With a shrug of his huge shoulders and a sullen grunt Duggan went on.
I should have seen it if it had been. Perhaps you took it with you to the orderly-room by mistake." "Perhaps I did," said Ida; and in the afternoon she asked her brother-in-law: "Otto, can you tell me whether I left the bread-knife lying in the orderly-room this morning?" The sergeant-major answered: "Perhaps so. I'll see." After which nothing more was said about the missing knife.
The loaf, the bread-knife, the butter, the marmalade, all stood on the table, and the kettle was boiling. Lowering my voice to an English sweetness, and dropping a few h's ostentatiously as I answered questions, I poured five cups of tea, and four mugs for the children, and cut more bread-and-butter, for they were all eating like wolves. They praised the butter.
"Don't kill him, just stay and spoil his dinner," Lorelei urged. Determination gleamed in Miss Demorest's countenance. "I'll do it he's spoiled many a dinner for me. But give me room. Don't touch me. I'm distilling poison like a cobra." She seized the gleaming bread-knife and brandished it. "When the crisis comes, stand back."
After the airless evening a wind had sprang up in the east; it thrashed among the lilac-stems as he came through them and across the turf, silent-footed as an Indian. In his right hand he had a bread-knife, held butt to thumb, dagger-wise. Where he had come by the rust-bitten thing no one knows, least of all himself.
His mother seemed not to have known he was near till he flung the door back and came stalking into the light with the rusty bread-knife in his hand. One would not have imagined there were blood enough left in her wasted heart, but her face went crimson when she lifted it and saw him. It brought him up short the blush, where he had looked for fright.
I thought of the curate, and, maddened by the recollection of all I had suffered, drew the bread-knife from my waist-belt, and shouting, "Go to join your dead languages!" stabbed him up to the maker's name in the semi-lunar ganglion. His head drooped, and he expired.
He handled the bread-knife with many flourishes, whistled over the edge to see how blunt it was, pretended the blade was loose, and put it on the anvil to rivet it. "It must have been used to cut paving-stories with," said he. But this was absurd; the blade was neither loose nor had it been misused. He was evidently a mountebank.
In the present instance he took up half the dinner-hour with a description of his latest mishap. A neighbor's cook had suddenly gone mad, and had charged him with putting a spell over her. "Somebody calls me up on the 'phone this morning: 'Is this Frank Congdon?... 'Yes. ... 'Hello, Frank, this is Henry. What you been doing to my cook? ... 'What does she say I have? ... 'Says you've hypnotized her put a spell over her. ... 'I pass. ... 'Fact; she's crazy as a bed-bug, and we can't do a thing with her and she was such a good girl. How could you, Frank? ... 'I never saw the creature in my life. ... 'Well, you'll see her now. You're to come right over and remove this spell, or we won't have any breakfast." Here Congdon looked solemnly round at his guests. "Now wouldn't that convulse a body? I didn't know her name; on my word, I couldn't remember how she looked. But my curiosity was roused, and over I toddled. It was all true. Karen was in the kitchen, armed with the jig-saw bread-knife and calling for me. Henry was all for my appearing suddenly at the door
