Thus Daniel came in contact with Jordan’s family. He had three children: Gertrude, aged nineteen, Eleanore, aged sixteen, and Benno, fifteen years old and still a student at the gymnasium. His wife was dead. Gertrude was said to be a pietist. She went to church every day, and had an inclination toward the Catholic religion, a fact which gave Jordan, as an inveterate Protestant, no little worry.
There was no other exit, and no means of giving an alarm. In this emergency the demeanour of the Italian Cardinals set a bright example to their ultramontane colleagues. "Bisogna pazienzia," they said, as they shrugged their shoulders. Nothing could exceed the mutual politeness of Cardinals Anno and Benno, unless that of the two who had sought to poison each other.
When she returned she had a flask of spirits and some biscuits in her hand, and this time, I noticed, she locked the door after her. "Edmond is sleeping; they have sent Aunt Rachel to Tokio," she almost whispered; "Benno, our servant, is to be trusted. I heard that you were starving in the hills; but how could I help how could I, Jasper?
He just stood there like a shivering fool. "Benno Regnarte, open that gate!" I repeated, seeing that I had the name all right; "I'll give you half a minute." The threat brought him to his senses. Without a word, a sign, a sound, he opened the iron doors and waited for me to go through. "Now," said I, "give me those keys and march on.
The official took out the papers and spread them on the desk between us. I watched him absently while he did so. Suddenly he uttered an exclamation. "Ah that's a haul!" he said, and pushed a bit of paper toward me. On it was engraved the name: Oberst Graf Benno von Scharlach.... "A good riddance," said the surgeon over my shoulder.
She saw the sea with fishing smacks and coloured sails. She saw gardens full of roses. Her father and Benno had come home long ago. She heard the bell up in the nearby church tower strike twelve—and then one—and then two. She heard some one walking back and forth in the house; she heard some one opening and closing a door. Then the steps died away, and all was quiet.
When Jordan would come home of an evening, the first thing he would hear from Eleanore was that Benno had an engagement with some of his friends, and that they were in the Alfas Garden, or in the Wolf’s Glen, or in Café Merkur, where the orchestrion, then a new invention, was being played for the first time.
He had not, however, proceeded far ere he was disturbed by the grating of another key in the lock, and had just time to whisper impressively, "Beware of Benno," ere he dived under a table. Benno was also provided with a lamp, wine, and cold viands.
But even he, according to Benno, was a pupil in the school of Silvester, and became no mean proficient in the arts of sorcery. Among other things he caused the matrons of Rome by his incantations to follow him in troops among woods and mountains, being bewitched and their souls subdued by the irresistible charms of his magic.
