Much to be preferred is the modest comment of the holy and learned Bengel on our text: "In this fourth word from the cross our Saviour not only says that He has been delivered up into the hands of men, but that He has suffered at the hands of God something unutterable." Certainly there is here something unutterable.
Doctor Bengel has shown from the Ballarium Romanum and other documents regarding the Papal government, that since the Roman Emperor Constantine I. the Pope had the seat of his administration until the time in which Doctor Bengel wrote, on five of the seven mountains, to wit, 1. on the mountain Coelius, 2. mountain Aventinus, 3. Vaticanus, 4. Qurinalis, 5. Esquilinus.
Doctor Bengel occupies amongst those forerunners a peculiar place; because he is the second angel or messenger, spoken of in Revel. xiv: 8, that is, the representative of messengers by whom the contents of that verse are fulfilled, because he was the first amongst those, who have proclaimed prophetically Christ's coming or Christ's manifestation to effect the fall of Babylon while they were showing the time in which it had to take place, and disclosing many other deep things which were not known before, and have warned people powerfully, to prepare for Christ's coming.
First, that his unhindered preaching in the very heart of the world's capital for two whole years is, in one aspect, the completion of the book. As Bengel tersely says, 'The victory of the word of God, Paul at Rome. The apex of the Gospel, the end of Acts. But, second, as clearly, the ending is abrupt, and is not a satisfying close.
The divinity of Christ implies one might almost say it means the eternal supremacy of those moral qualities which He exhibited in their perfection. 'Conversio fit ad Dominum ut Spiritum, as Bengel said. The visible or Catholic Church is not the name of an institution which has the privilege of being governed by bishops.
This was done by Doctor Bengel and his disciples prophetically, I mean, that they saw Christ's coming only in the image of the Biblical prophets, and did not know the manner of his coming, and pointed out the year 1836, as the tropical year for his coming. But when that year expired, those who had before great confidence in Dr.
