This chapter is entirely made up of extracts taken from my pamphlet, “The Baghdad Railway,” published in 1906, and from my book, “The Anglo-German Problem,” published in 1912.
It became the object of the consideration of successive tribunals, first of the local Shí’ah Ja’faríyyih court in Baghdád, second of the Peace court, then the court of First Instance, then of the court of Appeal in ‘Iráq, and finally of the League of Nations, the greatest international body yet come into existence, and empowered to exercise supervision and control over all Mandated Territories.

But the empire had extended too far west to revolve about that distant pivot. Abd-er-Rahman perhaps remembering the old feud between his family and the Abbasides determined to assume the spiritual headship of the western part of the empire. And thereafter, the Mahommedan empire like the Roman had two heads, an Eastern Khalif at Baghdad, and a Western Khalif at Cordova.
As change would have it, that very day, the Amir Khalid, Chief of the Baghdad Police, had gone down to the market to buy a slave-girl for his son Hebezlem Bezazeh. Now this son he had by his wife Khatoun, and he was foul of favour and had reached the age of twenty, without learning to ride, albeit his father was a valiant cavalier and a doughty champion and delighted in battle and adventure.
Thereupon he told her what he had heard from the horse-thief concerning Dhat ed Dewahi, how she was then in their land, on her way to Baghdad, and added, "It was she who slew my uncle and grandfather, and needs must I avenge them and wipe out our reproach."
To this Kanmakan made no reply, but returned to Baghdad: and Kuzia Fekan also returned home and complained of her cousin to her mother, who said to her, "O my daughter, belike he meant thee no ill, and is he not an orphan?
