The report of the Postmaster-General herewith attached shows that there was an increase of revenue in his Department in 1873 over the previous year of $1,674,411, and an increase of cost of carrying the mails and paying employees of $3,041,468.91.

If the picture styled La Dolorosa, and now No. 468 in the gallery of the Prado, is indeed the one painted for the great monarch who was so sick in body and spirit, so fast declining to his end, the suspicion is aroused that the courtly Venetian must have acted with something less than fairness towards his great patron, since the Addolorata cannot be acknowledged as his own work.

For Vice-President Elihu B. Washburne, Marshall Jewell, Thomas Settle, Horace Maynard, Chester A. Arthur, and Edmund J. Davis were placed in nomination, and General Arthur was chosen on the first ballot by a vote of 468 to 193 for Mr. Washburne and some scattering votes for other candidates. The result of the Convention was generally accepted as a happy issue of the long contest.
This enables people to enjoy all the runs down to Grindelwald, returning to Wengen by train. The Ski-ing is organized and there are good Guides and Instructors. Rinks and a most amusing toboggan run provide for off-days. Skis can be hired locally. GRINDELWALD, 3,468 feet above the sea, is too well-known as a Summer resort to need much description here.
