When the Mohammedan discovery of inoculation was brought from Constantinople in 1721, by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, it was so strenuously resisted by the clergy, that nothing short of its adoption by the royal family of England brought it into use.
His uncle and aunt had supplied the place of parents, and had been well rewarded for all they had done for him, by his consistent well doing and completely filial affection for them. Marian was startled from her musings by his voice close at hand, saying, "All alone, Marian?" "Gerald is with Jemmy Wortley, somewhere," she replied, "and I begged Mrs.
Introductory Anecdotes, p. cxxiii. Ibid. Vol. ii. p. 289. It is curious that to this unlucky incident, based according to Lady Louisa Stuart, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's grand-daughter, on a real accident to Mrs Fielding, Dr Johnson attributed the failure of the book with the public: "that vile broken nose ruined the sale," he declared.
Being very thirsty, both Wortley and I took a long pull at this, to the evident disgust of the natives. It was very good, being exactly like cow's milk. This was the elephant that I had killed doubly by the left-hand barrel exploding by accident, and the two balls were only a few inches apart in the forehead.
I suppose the colonial existence is as necessary to a people, as childhood and adolescence are to the man; but, as my Lady Mary Wortley Montagu told her friend, Lady Rich "Nay; but look you, my dear madam, I grant it a very fine thing to continue always fifteen; that, everybody must approve of it is quite fair: but, indeed, indeed, one need not be five years old."

Her story caused such excitement, that at last Dr. Johnson, Dr. Wortley, our ambassador at Constantinople. She was the most accomplished lady of the eighteenth century.
Apt, as she herself expresses it, "to tumble out her mind," her openness and honesty were appreciated, when at an advanced age, and after she had run the career of five courts by that experienced judge, the Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, who often presumed upon the venerable Duchess's candour in telling her unpalatable truths, which none but the honest could have borne to hear.
Time went on: Wortley made his desires known to the maiden's father, but a disagreement arose concerning the marriage settlement, and the Marquis of Dorchester he was not created Duke of Kingston until 1715 set about looking for another son-in-law. A gentleman was found whom Lady Mary professed to hate, and in August, 1712, Wortley carried her off in a coach and they were made man and wife.
Wortley suggested that the first attraction had been Agnes' unmitigated horror of the Lyddells, which he declared had won Mr. Arundel's heart, though he never owned how much he participated in it. It needs not to be stated how Edmund's noble behaviour was appreciated, more especially after the new lights which Marian was able to throw upon it.
Wortley said Arbuthnot by no means thought it satisfactory, but was to put the questions. Wortley said Arbuthnot told him the Duke had read the evidence and was himself satisfied the monopoly could not be maintained. Cabinet dinner at Lord Bathurst's. The Duke was at Windsor this morning.
