She found the Wizard of Oz, who was planting shoe-trees in the garden, and when she told him Inga's story he willingly agreed to accompany the little girl to the Nome King's caverns. They had both been there before and had conquered the nomes with ease, so they were not at all afraid.
Again and again there were the stirring notes of the bugle, shouts of good will and praise, wild, incessant cheers, as the Allan and Darling Team, with every dog in harness, and "Scotty" Allan at the handle-bars, swept over the line winners of the most hotly contested race the North has ever known, and led to victory by Baldy of Nome. Immortals of the Trail The brief summer was over.
So now the little music box ticked off its music to the entertainment of all. However, we were all tired and the place was cold, so after we had taken our last look at the lights of Nome, scattered as they were along the shore for miles in the darkness, we turned in for the night, all dressed as we were, and drew the curtains around us.
"I rather think Congress has troubles enough of its own just at present, without mixing up in dog racing in Nome. There won't be much excitement about it in Washington this session." But the Nome did not pronounce the word aright, either, having never heard it spoken but once before, and then with a wrong accent.
The trader was a canny man, but he loved to gamble, so when his friends offered to bet him that they could lower the record from Candle to Nome he went out into the night, sniffed the air and studied the stars, then laid them a hundred dollars that they could not. Excited to recklessness by this wager the volunteer mail-men cut down their load.
The Nome was also transformed and was climbing down the tree because the branches all around him were so thickly entwined that there was no room between them to fly. Kiki quickly joined his comrade and it did not take them long to reach the ground. The Li-Mon-Eags Make Trouble There had been trouble in the Forest of Gugu that morning.
We longed to reach Nome that we might be rid of some of these objectionable things, and hoped for an improvement afterward. From St.
