The little man sat down at the piano, meditated a minute, and began to play the rich chords of Rachmaninof's "Prelude." He got about half through, when Zip-bang! a small shell burst down the street. The dark fellow threw open the French window. The poilus were scurrying to shelter. The pianist continued with the "Prelude." Zip-bang! Zip-bang! Zshh Bang Bang. Bang-Bang! The piano stopped.
We were pushing up river on our way to the wilderness, when a great outcry and the bang-bang of a gun sounded just ahead. Dashing round a wooded bend, we came upon a man with a smoking gun, a boy up to his middle in the river, trying to get across, and, on the other side, a black sheep running about baaing at every jump. "He's taken the lamb; he's taken the lamb!" shouted the boy.
As Dick Prescott and his chums got out of the wedge they made a dash for the automobile. At that same instant the air bore to them the battle-yell of juniors and sophs at the front of the bank. The rear door of the building was yanked hastily open. Two masked men shot the rays of their bulls-eye lanterns out into the lane, while their right hands held revolvers. Bang-bang! Bang-bang!
There was nothing subtle however about the way in which the Senior Surgeon's hand shot out and slammed the tonneau door bang-bang again on its original passenger. His face was crimson with anger. Brusquely he pointed to the front seat. "You may sit in there, with me, Miss Malgregor!" he thundered. "Yes, sir," crooned the White Linen Nurse.
Dark alleys and secret papers and beautiful adventuresses and bang-bang have nothing at all to do with my job. There isn't a grain of romance in it. Ostensibly I am a war correspondent. I have handled all the big events in Serbia and Bulgaria and Greece and southwestern Russia. Boiled down, I am a census taker of undesirables.
Rattle and bang-bang and rattle sounded the noise of the drum in Grandpa Ford's house, and yet, as the grown folks downstairs in the sitting-room looked at one another, they could not imagine who was playing at soldier. And yet that is what it sounded like children beating a drum. "Are any of those little ones up?" asked Mother Bunker. "Could they have gotten out of their beds to beat a drum?"
He was on a destroyer: "Scarcely had we started when from out the mist and across our front, in furious pursuit, came the first cruiser squadron the town class, Birmingham, etc. each unit a match for three Mainzes; and as we looked and reduced speed they opened fire, and the clear 'bang-bang! of their guns was just a cooling drink.... "The Mainz was immensely gallant.
Bang-bang; bang-bang; bang loud, insistent; ping-ping sharp, piercing; the first from the trolly-car, the second from a steam-trailing automobile; a booming roar from the ground accompanying the first, a buzzing rattle the second. Just a block away a far louder rattle still comes from the elevated railway.
Blue mask it was, made outa a bandanna handkerchief. Well, rightaway I knew somethin' was liable to pop, for old Harrigan, scared to death, kep' a-goin' just the same. Maybe he hadn't sense enough to stop, as the fellow says. Maybe he didn't want to. Bang-bang! I reckon Tim was dead before he hit the ground.
Den dar come a yell dat nearly blowed de roof off de house. Big Mose gib a screech and run, and bang-bang went a lot ob guns all around us. De Injines was dar, burnin', tomahawkin', screechin', shoutin', and killin' de poor niggers as fast as dey showed demselves. I see'd Miss Mary " "Did they harm her?" "No! She didn't 'pear skeart a bit.
