The junco or snow-bird builds its nest on the floor of the Valley among the ferns; several species of sparrow are common and the beautiful lazuli bunting, a common bird in the underbrush, flitting about among the azalea and ceanothus bushes and enlivening the groves with his brilliant color; and on gravelly bars the spotted sandpiper is sometimes seen.

"Slaty the Junco and his relatives came along with us and we had a very merry party." Peter pricked up his ears. "Is Slaty here now?" he asked eagerly. "Very much here," replied a voice right behind Peter's back. It was so unexpected that it made Peter jump. He turned to find Slaty himself chuckling merrily as he picked up seeds. He was very nearly the same size as Dotty but trimmer.

Sun began his daily climb up in the blue, blue sky he looked down on a world of white. It seemed as if every little snowflake twinkled back at every little sunbeam. It was all very lovely, and Peter Rabbit rejoiced as he scampered forth in quest of his breakfast. He started first for the weedy field where the day before he had found Dotty the Tree Sparrow and Slaty the Junco.

For all that, I do not feel like taking a lofty tone in passing judgment upon Junco. He is not the only one whose wisdom is mixed with foolishness. There is at least one other person of whom the same is true, a person of whom I have nevertheless a very good opinion, and with whom I am, or ought to be, better acquainted than I am with any animal that wears feathers.

She fled as she recognized a stranger, and Van Dorn pursued till a door was closed in his face. "Poor fool!" he said, sinking into his chair again; "I will never be more honest than any woman can make me!" As Levin entered the little hallway Van Dorn smiled: "Here is a glass of real wine to inspire you, junco." "No, Captain. I would rather die than drink it." "Do you repent coming with me?"

Rabo de junco is explained to signify Rush-tailed: Rabo being a tail and Junco a rush in the Spanish language. Don Ferdinand compliments his father too largely in this place by supposing Cipango and Hispaniola the same.

Some birds are so sharp and nervous and emphatic in their movements, as the common snowbird or junco, the flashing of whose white tail quills expresses the character of the bird. But all the ways of the wood thrush are smooth and gentle, and suggest the melody of its song. It is the only bird thief I love to see carrying off my cherries.

I wanted the simpler, the more elemental things, things cosmic in their associations, nearer to the beginning or end of creation. The parrot that flashed through "nutmeg groves" did not hold out so much allurement as the simple gray-and-slaty junco.
