He stooped down, and caught the dead termite by two of its legs. Close to two hundred pounds the mass weighed; but strength is an inconstant thing, and increases or decreases according to the vital needs of life-preservation. Clear of the floor, Denny lifted the bulk, and with its repulsive weight clasped in his arms, he advanced toward the mighty guard.

A ladder was there. Termite seized it and dragged it towards the disemboweled house, which was lashed every minute by broadsides of splinters. "Termite!" cried the lieutenant, "I forbid you to go there! You're doing no good." "I'm the owner of my skin, lieutenant," Termite replied, without stopping or looking round. He placed the ladder, climbed up and unhooked the dead man.

Her health and daily development and color-change were things to be inquired after and discussed; one of us watched her closely and made notes of her life, one painted every radical development of color and pattern, another photographed her, and another brought her delectable scum. She was waited upon as sedulously as a termite queen. And she rewarded us by living, which was all we asked.

Pillars, cupolas, vaults nothing is too difficult or too complicated for these small and patient labourers. The earliest comprehensive account of the Termites and their industries was by Smeathman in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol. lxxi., 1781, pp. 139-192. Later they were studied by Lespès: "Recherches sur l'organisation et les moeurs du Termite lucifuge," Ann. des Sci.

The Termite Queen The slope of the upward-leading tunnels had become less noticeable, from which fact the two men reasoned hopefully that they were near ground level. And now they began to see termite workers bearing a new sort of burden: termite eggs, sickly looking lumps that had only too obviously been newly laid. A file of workers approached.

Another leg fell hollowly to the floor, like an abandoned piece of armor; and then two at once from the second termite. Both stopped, shuddering convulsively. The agony of those two enormous, dumb and blind things must have been inconceivable. The acid was by now spending its awful force in their vitals, having seeped down through every joint and crevice in their living armor.

They say what they like to us, or they don't say it, and you believe it. They say to you, 'This is what you've got to believe in! They " I found myself growing privately incensed against Termite, by the same instinct which had once thrown me upon his accomplice Brisbille. I interrupted him. "Who are they your 'they'?" "Kings," said Termite.

For that, it would be necessary for things to happen which never would happen. But I should have liked to be taken into the office. Others were there who were not so clearly indicated as I for that work. I regarded myself as a victim of injustice. One morning I found myself face to face with Termite, Brisbille's crony and accomplice, and he arrived in our company by voluntary enlistment!

But the monster gave no indication of doing such a thing. Another worker termite flung its bulk at them. Its mandibles, tiny in comparison with those of the great guards but still capable of slicing either of the men in two, snapped perilously close to Jim's body. There was a second's concerted action: Dennis' club lashed against the thing's head, Jim's spear tore into the vulnerable body.

They were in the very place Dennis had wished so much to avoid the chamber of the Queen termite! High overhead, almost lost in the dimness, was the arching roof. Around the circular walls were innumerable tunnel entrances.
