Baker, Botts, Parker and Garwood to represent him and secured from Governor Odell at Albany a requisition on Governor Lanham of Texas for the extradition of the prisoner, which he entrusted to Detective Sergeant Herlihy of the New York Police.
At the conclusion of the afternoon exercises Governor Odell reviewed the New York State troops on the plaza in Forest Park. The review was held in the presence of a large assemblage and was an inspiring sight.
Last year some hay-seeds along the Hudson River, mostly in Odell's neighborhood, got dissatisfied with the docks where they landed their vegetables, brickbats, and other things they produce in the river counties. They got together and said: "Let's take a trip down to New York and pick out the finest dock we can find. Odell and the Legislature will do the rest."
Among Carl's class was Hank Odell, the senior student, tall, thin, hopelessly plain of face; a drawling, rough-haired, eagle-nosed Yankee, who grinned shyly and whose Adam's apple worked slowly up and down when you spoke to him; an unimaginative lover of dogs and machinery; the descendant of Lexington and Gettysburg and a flinty Vermont farm; an ex-fireman, ex-sergeant of the army, and ex-teamster.
Odell's father had been secretary before him from the foundation of the province, so that the Odell family had held that important and highly lucrative office for sixty years. The governor at this time was Sir William Colebrooke, and on January 1st, 1845, just one week after the death of Mr.
Odell hardly knew what course to take; whether to stir up with some pretty sharp remarks the little company of believers who were present, and thus seek to impress the whole through them; or to wait until he came round again, and have a good chance at them from the pulpit. He concluded in the end, that the last course might be the best one.
Pursuant to the provisions of this act, Governor Odell named as the twelve members of the Commission: Edward H. Harriman, of New York city; Louis Stern, of New York city; Edward Lyman Bill, of New York city; William Berri, of Brooklyn; Cyrus E. Jones, of Jamestown; Lewis Nixon, of New York city; John C. Woodbury, of Rochester; Frank S. McGraw, of Buffalo; John K. Stewart, of Amsterdam; James H. Callanan, of Schenectady; John Young, of Geneseo; and Mrs.
I pointed out how the Legislature could give the whole waterfront to the hayseeds over the head of the Dock Commissioner in the same way, and warned the Mayor that nations had rebelled against their governments for less. But it was no go. Odell and Low were pards and well, my dock was stolen.
And there was a sweet little grandmother here, who, in her girlhood, had the same name as the little visitor Hannah Underhill. There was no Ann in it to be sure. And now her name was Hannah Horton. There were lots of gay, rollicking cousins. The little girl felt almost afraid of the big boys, and she was used to boys, too. Her mother had said she might make a visit with the Odell girls.
Odell said to the brother who had ridden that circuit during the previous year "So, I am to follow in your footsteps?" "It appears so," was the brief reply. "How did you like the circuit?" "I am very well pleased to change." "Not much encouragement in that answer." "We can't all have good places. Some of us must take our turn in the highways and byways of the land."
