According to Sir John Maundeville, there it stood in the vicinity of Mount Sion, "the tree of eldre, that Judas henge himself upon, for despeyr," a legend which has been popularly received. Shakespeare, in his "Love's Labour's Lost," says "Judas was hanged on an elder," and the story is further alluded to in Piers Plowman's vision:
Financial Conditions in August, 1914 No Scheme prepared to meet the Possibility of War A Short Struggle expected The Importance of Finance as a Weapon Labour's Example The Economic Problem of War The Advantages of Direct Taxation The Government follows the Path of Least Resistance The Effect of Currency Inflation.
Division of labour's the secret of success, they say." "Secret of England's greatness," mused Dixon. "The true secret of England's greatness lies in her dependencies, Mr.
Garrick one day since we were married, near twenty-eight years, I cannot now leave her. Garrick Corres. ii. 150. 'Garrick's widow is buried with him. She survived him forty-three years "a little bowed-down old woman, who went about leaning on a gold-headed cane, dressed in deep widow's mourning, and always talking of her dear Davy." Love's Labour's Lost, act ii. sc. i. See ante, ii. 461.
But what remedy now? this is all to no purpose: For though the Grandmother, Nurse, and Ant do what they can, yet all their labour's lost.
Now came one of those swift emergencies that seems to crowd so fast upon Lloyd George's life and with it arose my own opportunity. The British Trade Union Congress in annual session at Bristol had expressed Labour's dissatisfaction over its share of the munitions profits. Lloyd George had sent them a letter explaining his proposed excess profit tax, but this apparently was not enough.
The note of his earliest comic style was often a boyish or a birdlike wantonness, very capable of such liberties and levities as those of Lesbia's sparrow with the lip or bosom of his mistress; as notably in the parts of Boyet and Mercutio: and indeed there is a bright vein of mere wordy wilfulness running throughout the golden youth of the two plays which connects Love's Labour's Lost with Romeo and Juliet as by a thread of floss silk not always "most excellently ravelled," nor often unspotted or unentangled.
Now, with these parallel passages before them, what man, woman, or child could bring himself or herself to believe that the connection of these plays was casual or the date of the first Othello removable from the date of the early contemporary late-first-period-but-one play Love's Labour's Lost, or that anybody's opinion that they were so was worth one straw?
The most important of the dramatists who were Shakspere's forerunners, or early contemporaries, was Christopher or as he was familiarly called Kit Marlowe. Born in the same year with Shakspere , he died in 1593, at which date his great successor is thought to have written no original plays, except the Comedy of Errors and Love's Labour's Lost.
Supposing that Shakespeare obtained his knowledge of fine manners and speech, and of the tedious quips and conceits which he satirises, from the contemporary poems, plays, and novels which abounded in them, and from precieux and precieuses who imitated them, as I suggest, even then Love's Labour's Lost is an extremely eccentric piece.
