It was and is the teaching of the Roman Church that, where the actual reception of any sacrament is impossible, the earnest desire to receive it suffices for salvation. The desire is known as the votum sacramenti. In Spain. The shrine of St. James at that place was a famous resort for pilgrims. Cf. below, p. 191, and note.

SECTION XCV. NINETEENTH CAPITAL. This is, of course, the second counting from the Sea, on the Piazzetta side of the palace, calling that of the Fig-tree angle the first. It is the most important capital, as a piece of evidence in point of dates, in the whole palace. SECTION XCVI. First side. "ST. SIMPLICIUS": so inscribed.

The XCV Theses were called forth by the preaching of the "Jubilee Indulgence" of 1510, which was not placed on sale in central Germany until 1515. The financial needs of the papacy were never greater than in the last years of the XV. and the first years of the XVI. Century, and they were further increased by the resolve of Julius II. to erect a new church of St.
