Eight forms of electric lamps using infusible earthy oxides and brought to high incandescence in vacuo by high potential current of several thousand volts; same character as impingement of X-rays on object in bulb. A loud-speaking telephone with quartz cylinder and beam of ultra-violet light. Four forms of arc light with special carbons. A thermostatic motor.

Since the X-rays were then the only ones known to possess the power to penetrate opaque substances it seemed as though the problem of producing X-rays by sunlight was solved. Then came the fortunate accident. After several plates had been prepared for exposure to sunlight a severe storm arose and the experiments had to be abandoned for the time being.

The deformities which are so liable to develop from contraction of the cicatrices are treated on general principles. #Injuries produced by Exposure to X-Rays and Radium.# In the routine treatment of disease by radiations, injury is sometimes done to the tissues, even when the greatest care is exercised as to dosage and frequency of application. Robert Knox describes the following ill-effects.

Gazing through this window or, rather, gazing at it, for X-rays could hardly have succeeded in actually penetrating the alluvial deposits on the glass was a little man. As Ashe entered, he turned and looked at him as though he hurt him rather badly in some tender spot. Ashe was obliged to own to himself that he felt a little nervous.

Legend, however, tells us of an extraordinary physician of the fifth century B.C. who was able to see into the viscera of his patients an apparent anticipation of the X-rays and who, by his intimate knowledge of the human pulse, effected many astounding cures. We also read of an eminent physician of the second and third centuries A.D. who did add surgery to this other qualifications.

There are X-rays ready to penetrate me in all directions. I may have any and every treatment hypnotic, therapeutic or thaumaturgic for which I am able to pay.

With the dark X-rays he photographs the bone incased in flesh, the coins contained in the purse. With his magnet the scientist throws a rope around the cathode rays and drags them whithersoever he will. In the field the inventor uses an electric hoe to kill the germs of the thistle and deadly nightshade.

I recall reading not long ago of a German professor who says there is no essential difference between wireless waves and the X-rays, and we know the terrible physical effects of X- rays. I believe he estimated that only one three hundred millionth part of the electrical energy generated by sending a message from one station to another near by is actually used up in transmitting the message.

His water-ray apparatus, a recent development of the X-rays which enabled him to see under water for a distance of fifty yards, had detected no contact mines, and yet Spithead ought to be enstrewn with them, just as it ought to have been swarming with submarines and destroyers. There must be some deep meaning to such apparently incomprehensible neglect, but what was it?

Most of his patients experienced so much immediate relief they voluntarily took at least four complete series, or 48 colonics, before their X-rays began to look normal in terms of structure. It also took about the same number, 48 colonics, for the patients to notice a significant improvement in the function of the colon.
