Gillies has especially developed this method in the remedying of deformities of the face caused by gunshot wounds and by petrol burns in air-men.

But it is unnecessary to multiply instances. There never seems to have been any deviation from the principle that required absolute physical perfection, until, within a few years, the spirit of expediency has induced some Grand Lodges to propose a modified construction of the law, and to admit those whose maims or deformities were not such as to prevent them from complying with the ceremonial of initiation.

It should also be borne in mind that the correction of skeletal deformities requires effort through a long period of time, especially where the deformities are pronounced; and one lacking the will power to persist will not secure all the results which he seeks.

For I knew, members of the Boule, that all men having such a calamity seek something like this, and study this problem, how to manage their deformities with the least pain to themselves. You taught me all their arts, their contrivances, their lawlessness, and crime. You encouraged my own deformities of soul till they became monsters, and my own spirit such a monster that I no longer knew myself.

But this unsymmetrical development is a thing to be avoided, as it is usually productive of certain deformities, such as stoop shoulders and certain peculiarities of gait, which are plainly noticeable in men employed in certain avocations.

This advice of not putting a child early on his feet, I must strongly insist on, as many mothers are so ridiculously ambitious that their young ones should walk early that they should walk before other children of their acquaintance have attempted that they have frequently caused the above lamentable deformities; which is a standing reproach to them during the rest of their lives.
