Not a joy was wanting in this crowning bliss. The guide was "a wonderful chap named Big-Foot Williams, so called by the Indians, good all around from knocking over a rabbit to tackling a grizzly," with an amazing knowledge of woodcraft, "a nose like a bloodhound, an eye as cool as a toad's."

The boys are at a summer camp in the Adirondack woods, and Tom enters heart and soul into the work of making possible to other boys the opportunities in woodcraft and adventure of which he himself has already had a taste. Tom Slade on the River A carrier pigeon falls into the camp of the Bridgeboro Troop of Boy Scoots.

On the previous evening an old hunter, just back from a successful "calling" over on Nictau Lake, had given the boy some lessons in this alluring and suggestive department of woodcraft, and had made his joy complete by the gift of the bark "moose-call" itself, a battered old tube with many "kills" to its credit.

He had a long distance to travel, but he reached the scene of the encounter with the strange animal, just as it was growing dark. At this point, he showed admirable woodcraft.

Never have I rested better on mahogany beds than I did on such pungent bunks! Lying there, physically weary, mentally relaxed, drowsily gazing into my campfire, I lived over the day's adventures, and would not have changed places with any man alive! I found making camp in temperate weather was no task at all. It was when it was cold or wet that the real test of my woodcraft came.

Half leading, half dragging her friend, Flip made her way with unerring woodcraft down the ravine.

"He knows fully as much about woodcraft as he does about every other kind of craft. He's one of his mother's antiquities personified. But haven't you been able to find anyone who saw him after you went for your ride?" "No; even the hotel help were all out on the lake." "And he left Diogenes here, absolutely unguarded?" "Well!" admitted Silvia, "he tied Diogenes to a tree near the sandpile."

Not having any adventures that seemed important, except, perhaps, Blackhawk's defeat of Woodpecker and Little Beaver, subjects that did not interest the artist, the outside decorations were the totem of the clan and its members. White-Man's Woodcraft Blackhawk was the introducer of a new game which he called "judging."

At night when the expeditions return, the camp resumes its animation. Adventures are recounted, every statement of the narrator being disputed and argued. Everybody has become an adept in woodcraft; but nobody credits his neighbor with like instinct. Society getting resolved into its elements, confidence is gone. Whilst the hilarious party are at supper, a drop or two of rain falls.

To me he was never the servant, scarcely even the companion, for he seemed like a being from another world, who had a knowledge of things hid from human ken. In woodcraft he was a master beyond all thought of rivalry.
