NEW BEDFORD, Feb. 14, 1824. MY DEAR FRIEND, I cannot repress the inclination to offer you my sympathy. Ware died in the interval between those two letters she was the daughter of Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse, of Cambridge, Mass. In 1827 Mr. May God sustain and comfort you! You are supported, I well know, while you are afflicted, in every recollection of what you lave lost.

Blind beetles, which cannot of course behold each other's beauty, never, as I hear from Mr. Waterhouse, jun., exhibit bright colours, though they often have polished coats; but the explanation of their obscurity may be that they generally inhabit caves and other obscure stations.

But the difficulty is not nearly so great as at first appears: all this beautiful work can be shown, I think, to follow from a few simple instincts. I was led to investigate this subject by Mr. Waterhouse, who has shown that the form of the cell stands in close relation to the presence of adjoining cells; and the following view may, perhaps, be considered only as a modification of his theory.

I will specify the few other cases in which I have heard of a difference in colour between the sexes of beetles. These two latter beetles belong to the family of Longicorns. Messrs. R. Trimen and Waterhouse, jun., inform me of two Lamellicorns, viz., a Peritrichia and Trichius, the male of the latter being more obscurely coloured than the female.

There was a long pause and they could see in the distance Humphrey Barker with his clarionet and Pliny Waterhouse with his bass viol driving up to the churchyard fence to hitch their horses. The sun was dipping low and red behind the Town-House Hill on the other side of the river. "What makes my father dislike the very mention of yours?" asked Waitstill.

Watchmakers, short-sighted. Waterhen. Waterhouse, C.O., on blind beetles; on difference of colour in the sexes of beetles. Waterhouse, G.R., on the voice of Hylobates agilis. Water-ouzel, autumn song of the. Waterton, C., on the Bell-bird; on the pairing of a Canada goose with a Bernicle gander; on hares fighting. Wattles, disadvantageous to male birds in fighting.

Tree Court had been partly built in Jacobean times by Dr. Perse, whose monument can be seen in the chapel; but in 1867 Mr. Waterhouse was given the task of rebuilding the greater part of the quadrangle. He decided on the style of the French Renaissance, and struck the most stridently discordant note in the whole of the architecture of the colleges.

He shows just one saving glint of skepticism. He offered to release Mother Waterhouse if she would materialize her spirit. Mother Waterhouse was her own worst enemy. Her own testimony was the principal evidence presented against her, and yet she denied guilt on one particular upon which the attorney-general had interrogated her.

The spring still gives out an abundance of water; we have also found another good spring on the south side of the creek, which is here very broad, nearly two hundred yards wide, with a good feeding country all round, and a small strip of salt-bush on the banks. Splendid gum-trees in the creek. Wind, east; sun, hot. Sunday, 29th July, The Hugh, between McDonnell and Waterhouse Ranges.

Waterhouse; and a woodcut from the sketch thus procured, with a history of his life and adventures, may be found even unto this day in Dr. Woodward's 'Manual of the Mollusca, to witness if I lie.
