The best and most thorough work in English is J. R. Seeley, Life and Times of Stein, or Germany and Prussia in the Napoleonic Age, 2 vols. .

Her mission is indeed a noble one; it is to maintain the principles of law, good government, and pure religion; her genius lies in sober conservatism and high-minded monarchy; her heroes are Duerer, Luther, Frederic the Great, vom Stein, Richard Wagner.

Vom Stein, Scharnhorst, the son of a Hanoverian peasant, and Hardenberg put new life into the state. At Waterloo the pummelled squares of red-coats were relieved by these Prussians, and Blücher, or "Old Marschall Vorwärts" as he was called, redeemed his countrymen's years of effeminate lassitude and vacillation.

It appeared that when Prince Otto met me after my interview with Prince Ernest, he did his best to provoke a rencontre, and failing to get anything but a nod from my stunned head, betook himself to my University. A friendly young fellow there, Eckart vom Hof, offered to fight him on my behalf, should I think proper to refuse.

He, like Vom Stein, Treitschke, and many others in their time, came to Berlin and established himself there as in the centre of a new national activity. Carl von Clausewitz did in the military world much what Stein did in the civil world. Vom Stein and Clausewitz died in the same year, 1831. In 1834 Heinrich von Treitschke was born.

However, the figures of the old legend were not forgotten, but lived on among the people, and were finally embodied in a popular ballad, "Das Lied vom Hurnen Segfrid", which has been preserved in a print of the sixteenth century, although the poem itself is thought to go back at least to the thirteenth.

Goethe chose the title of his essay so as to refute Kant by its very wording. Against this, Goethe puts his Anschauende Urteilskraft. 2 'Der Alte vom Königsberge' a play upon words with the name of Kant's native town, Königsberg. 3 It is naturally to be expected that new light will also be thrown on the various realms of knowledge as such dealt with in these pages.

A little work published in the fifties by the Vienna critic, Dr. E. Hanslick, entitled Vom musikalisch-Schoenen, discusses this question very fully. It attained great celebrity at the time of its publication and is still read.

In the next section, emanating entirely from Bode, “Vom Gesundheitstrinken,” the author is somewhat more successful in catching the spirit of Sterne in his buoyancy, and in his whimsical anecdote telling: it purports to be an essay by the author’s friend, Grubbius. The last addition made by Bode introduces once more Yorick’s sentiment relative to man’s treatment of the animal world. Yorick, walking in the garden of an acquaintance, shoots a sparrow and meets with reproof from the owner of the garden. Yorick protests prosaically that it was only a sparrow, yet on being assured that it was also a living being, he succumbs to vexation and self-reproof at his own failure to be true to his own higher self. Of Goethe's father we know only what the son himself has told us in his memoirs. A man of austere presence, from whom Goethe, as he tells us, inherited his bodily stature and his serious treatment of life, "Vom Vater hab ich die Statur, Des Lebens ernstes führen."
