Every company got its equipment into action and lines of hose were strung in some cases nearly half a mile. There were at least a dozen hand engines and two steamers on the banks of Otter Creek supplying lines to the fire, not to mention the hundreds of feet of hose that were coupled to the village hydrant system in every direction. But all that the willing vamps could do seemed to no avail.
He seemed altogether unable to sit still or control himself. His boots brown tops with narrow patent vamps beat a tattoo upon the floor. No wonder that Felicia shrunk into the corner of her lounge! I felt that it was impossible for me to sit and watch them any longer. I rose to my feet. Felicia saw me first, then her companion. Felicia's first expression, to my intense joy, was one of relief.
When hit with a sledge-hammer it proclaimed to Fairport that the "consuming element" was at large. At the moment Winthrop asked his question, over the village of Fairport and over the bay and marshes, and far out across the Sound, the great steel bar sent forth a shuddering boom of warning. From the room above came a wild tumult of joyous yells. "Fire!" shrieked the vamps, "fire!"
As she stood working at her machine, stitching linings to vamps, she kept a sharply listening ear for what went on about her, but there was very little to hear after work had fairly commenced and the great place was in full hum.
A ridiculous, dead-in-earnest song, relating in three long verses the circumstances of the song-contest and the singer's tender hopes. By the end of the second verse, the teasing shoe-maker has tapped so much that the soles are solid with the vamps.
First thing you knew, there they were. They didn't pay such an awful lot of attention to you. Just took you for granted. A couple of young kids, a girl of fourteen, and a boy of sixteen who asked you easy questions about the army till you found yourself patronising him. And a tall black-haired girl who made you think of the vamps in the movies, only her eyes were different.
In the midst of the meal I noted two well-dressed young men by the door, asking questions; I chuckled to myself, seeing more head-lines double ones, and extra size: PROPHET OF GOD VAMPS MOVIE KING MAGNATE OF SCREEN PAYS THOUSAND FOR LUNCH
The two men crouching by the cellar window heard the rush of feet, the engine banging and bumping across the sidewalk, its brass bell clanking crazily, the happy vamps shouting hoarse, incoherent orders. Through the window Sam lowered a bag of tools he had taken from Winthrop's car. "Can you open the lock with any of these?" he asked. "I can kick it open!" yelled Winthrop joyfully.
Right here it goes 'Tum dee-dee dum dee-dee tum dum dum. See? Like that. And then Jim vamps. Get me?" Terry, at the piano, would pucker her pretty brow a moment. Then, "Like this, you mean?" "That's it! You've got it." "All right. I'll tell the drum." She could play any tune by ear, once heard. She got the spirit of a thing, and transmitted it.
She's engaged to be married to a demonstrator in the Speedwell Auto Company, and he thneaks off when he can get away and gives her joy-rides. That's all the limousine she's got. It beats me why girls in the show business are alwayth tho crazy to make themselves out vamps with a dozen millionaires on a string.
