Here is a story to prove this; and you can believe just as much as ever you please. Pluffles was a subaltern in the "Unmentionables." He was callow, even for a subaltern. He was callow all over like a canary that had not finished fledging itself. The worst of it was he had three times as much money as was good for him; Pluffles' Papa being a rich man and Pluffles being the only son.

He despised mats, and seldom or never wiped his feet on entering the house; he was happiest when he could don his most dilapidated unmentionables, as he could then sit down where he pleased without the fear of his mother before his eyes, and enter upon a game of marbles with his mind perfectly free from all harassing cares growing out of any possible accident to the aforesaid garments, so that he might give that attention to the game that its importance demanded.

The worthy merchant a bald-headed, rosy-faced gentleman, of large proportions, who wore brown cloth knee-breeches, large silver buckles, a flowered waistcoat of ample length, with a snowy neckcloth, and a frilled shirt, a coat of the same hue as his unmentionables received us, as he descended the steps, with a cordiality I little expected.

"To show," he said, "how absurd they are, your donkey would not be permitted because he has no trousers; and you even will have to put on a gown, as your unmentionables will be considered indecorous."

Say it's becas I'm an honest woman and don't care to hide the a unmentionables when I wear them as the t'others do," sprinkled with the dandy's famous invocations. He began to conceive romance in that sort of fun. "You're a wopper, my brave Dick! won't let any peeler take me? by Jove!"

When this has been successfully accomplished, the extra length of trousers is rolled up so as to prevent the "unmentionables" from being left behind as you walk away, and a short coat, tight at the shoulders and in the shape of a bell, with short but wide sleeves, is put on to cover the upper part of the body. This coat also, like the trousers, is padded, and reaches almost to the haunches.

In a few minutes the twain were alongside me, and in happy forgetfulness of the ruin wrought upon their unmentionables in the process of "shinning" aloft eagerly noting through their telescopes the operations in progress on board the slavers. "They seem very busy there," observed the skipper with his eye still peering through the tube of his telescope.

If ten minutes make half an hour, then it took Jack that long to rush upstairs, two steps at a time, burst into his room, strip off his boots, tear off his wet clothes, struggle into others jerked from his wardrobe, tie a loose, red-silk scarf under the rolling collar of his light-blue flannel shirt, slip into a grey pea-jacket and unmentionables, give his hair a brush and a promise, tilt a dry hat on one side of his head and skip down-stairs again.
