At a short distance from the saddles, several blankets red and green ones with a bear-skin and a couple of buffalo-robes, were lying upon the grass; and on a branch overhead hung whips, bridles, water-gourds, and spurs. Against the trunk of a tulip-tree, that towered over the tent, rested three guns.
He was my father's murderer; and I couldn't help loving him! It was that that filled up the cup of my misery to overflowing. I loved the man well: and I must turn to denounce him. He came back, flushed and hot, expecting thanks for his pains. "Well, she'll get you the lemon, Una," he said, panting. "I overtook her by the big tulip-tree."
Nor was it unoccupied by lovers; for two pretty doves birds emblematic of the tender passion sat side by side upon the bough of a tulip-tree, their bronzed throats swelling at intervals with soft amorous notes. Oh, how I envied those little creatures! How I should have rejoiced in a destiny like theirs!
The name of tulip-tree comes from its flowers, which in size and shape very much resemble tulips, and are of a greenish-yellow colour tinged with orange. It was the characteristic tree around the glade. There were many others, though; and most conspicuous, with its large wax-like leaves and blossoms, was the magnolia grandiflora.
The leaves and flowers of the tulip-tree are so simple and strong of outline that they need not be conventionalized for decorative purposes. During the process of growth the leaves often take on accidental shapes well suited to the variations required by the designer.
Hurrah!" vociferated Legrand, letting the negro go, and executing a series of curvets and caracoles, much to the astonishment of his valet, who, arising from his knees, looked mutely from his master to myself, and then from myself to his master. "Come! we must go back," said the latter, "the game's not up yet;" and he again led the way to the tulip-tree.
The hideous creature, instead of rushing on its prey, had beaten a sudden retreat and taken refuge in the upper branches of the tulip-tree, for a formidable enemy menaced its stronghold. Here, then, was Nicholl, his gun on the ground, forgetful of danger, trying if possible to save the victim from its cobweb prison.
Wild vines ... intertwine each other at the feet of these trees, escalade their trunks and creep along to the extremity of their branches, stretching from the maple to the tulip-tree, from the tulip-tree to the hollyhock, and thus forming thousands of grottos, arches and porticos.
Storrs, who declared, in an address in 1879, that he was against any new version because of the history of the King James version, describing it as a great oak with roots running deep and branches spreading wide. He declared we were not ready to give it up for any modern tulip-tree. There is something in that, though such figures are not always good argument.
He at once agreed with them, and sanctioned their proposal to go over to the island, if they could find means of crossing. After a diligent search they came across an old canoe hollowed out of a tulip-tree log. It was a cranky affair, and likely to turn over if their hair was not parted exactly in the middle; but both of the boys were used to canoe management, and they decided to risk the thing.
