There is here less of the blur of leaves than that seen in later pictures, but the same soft effect is found, and the little "bings" are the accents of light placed upon a leaf, a nymph's shoulder, or a tree-trunk. This picture was painted in 1851, when Corot had not yet developed that style which was to mark all his later work.

He seized an axe and in a couple of chops felled a tree. Next he took a saw and in a few minutes sawed the tree-trunk into broad, long boards. He then nailed the boards together into the shape of a boat, about twelve feet long and four feet wide. He cut from another tree a long, slender pole which, when trimmed of its branches and fastened upright in the center of the boat, served as a mast.

It came in a sharp command from Bill, who had seated himself on a fallen tree-trunk. "Git busy," he ordered. "Set that doggone water in the tub, an' Sunny ken dip the boiler full of cold. You boys ken do that while Zip gets the kids ready. Guess he'll likely know best wher' the strings an' buttons is." His orders were silently executed by the men.

And I disgustedly threw away another little sliver of wood I had picked off the tree-trunk. Holmes merely laughed and said: "I guess you're simply sore because I dumped you into the creek accidentally yesterday, Doc. The old saying has it that no man is a hero to his valet, but I guess I'm not a hero to my physician either.

Far below The Dam, where the changeful current had left a wide sand-bar and a great tree-trunk stretched its fallen length across from the shore to the water's edge, the mud-turtles basked in the sun-shine, and, at the approach of Boyhood, glided or splashed to the safety of the water.

Banneker, leaning against the slender tree-trunk, dreamed over her, happily and aimlessly. Io opened her eyes to meet his. She stirred softly and smiled at him. "So you discovered me," she said. "How long have you been here?" She studied the sun a moment before replying. "Several hours." "Did you walk over in the night?" "No. You told me not to, you know. I waited till the dawn.

The man threw a leg over the tree-trunk and disappeared. A moment later he was heard clambering into the boat and then clambering out. "I've got it," he cried. A flash and a report at the very foot of the hill followed. "I am hit," yelled the man. "Look out, look out I am hit," and instantly all the rifles went off.

She had always been a little afraid of the dark a fact that made her contemptuous of herself. Nevertheless, she did not peer into the deeper pits of gloom. She knew her way and could slip swiftly along with only a rustle of leaves she touched. Suddenly she imagined she heard a step and she halted, still as a tree-trunk. There was no reason to be afraid of a step.

The full moon climbed into the sky as we sat around our camp-fire, and showed her face above the dark, pointed tree-tops. The winding vale was flooded with silver radiance that rested on river and rock and tree-trunk and multitudinous leafage like an enchantment of tranquillity.

Yet this suffices: and it seems to me that there is something very tenderly touching about these thin yule-twigs which make, with all the loving ceremonial and rejoicing that might go with a whole tree-trunk, the poor man's Christmas fire. In the country, the poorest man is sure of his cacho-fiò.
