The impression those fowls made upon me seems as vivid to-day as it was when first made. The topknot was the extra touch the touch of poetry that I have always looked for in things, and that Hiram, in his way, craved and sought for, too. There was something, too, in my maternal grandfather that probably foreshadowed the nature-lover and nature-writer.

Stern saw him vaguely through the drifting vapor by the blue-green light of the cresset at the bow. He was clad in a coarse kind of brownish stuff, like the first, roughly and loosely woven. His long hair, pure white, was twisted up in a kind of topknot and fastened there by pins of dull gold.

The Japanese did not at once insist on a general system of hair-cutting, but they brought the greatest pressure to bear on all in any way under their authority. Court officials, public servants, magistrates, and the like, were commanded to cut their hair. Officials were evidently instructed to make every one who came under their influence have his topknot off.

The two went down the terrace steps side by side. Mrs. Champney watched them out of sight; there was a kindling light in her faded eyes. "Now, we'll see," said Champney, as they neared the coach house and saw in the window the bundle of brown tow with black nose flattened on the pane and eyes filled with longing under the tangled topknot.

The body is a rich living green, red wings, yellow beak, and black throat; there is a tuft of vivid red as a topknot, and the tail is a brilliant blue; the under feathers of the tail being a pure snowy white. At times the silence is broken by a loud, metallic, bell-like cry, very like the yodel you hear in the Alps. You hear it rise sharp and distinct, 'Looralei! and as suddenly cease.

All the while such a pleasant lunch is going on, the amiable birds make complimentary remarks to one another about their dress how very handsome is one's long pointed topknot, what a becoming yellow border another's tail has, and how particularly fine are the coral-red bangles on the wings of a third which is much better than if they should pick each other to pieces and talk about 'frumps' under their breath.

The man was bearded, wearing his thick mop of black hair in a round topknot secured by a hide loop. He wore a skin tunic, now in considerable disarray, which was held in place with a woven, tasseled belt. "Ho, so it is Lal of the Quick Tongue who speaks so loudly of spirits and the Wrath of Lurgha!" Ashe studied his captive.

As the person grows older and capable of looking after himself this precaution is not so important, although many people wear the scalp lock or sacred topknot through life. The sacred thread is even of greater importance in Hinduism, and the Brahmins require that each child shall be invested with it in his eighth year.

I s'pose Maria 'ull say 'at I'm gone plumb crazy; but, for that matter, if I ever get her down to see you jest once, the trick's done with her, too, for you're the prettiest thing God ever made in the shape of a bird, 'at I ever saw. Look at that topknot a wavin' in the wind!

If old Colorow's gang had begun on you they certainly wouldn't 'a' quit without takin' my topknot for a souvenir of an evenin' when a pleasant time was had by all." He yawned a second time. "What say? Let's hit the hay. I don't aim for to do no ridin' this mornin'." A faint sniffling sound came from the bunk. Dud turned. "What's ailin' you now?" he wanted to know.
