Not so, said an early school of Theosophy, God, i.e. the God who has a bodily form and manifests the hidden glory, dwells on a point in the extreme north, called by the Babylonians 'the heaven of Anu. The Point, however, i.e. the God of the Point, may also be entitled 'The Gate, i.e. the Avenue to God in all His various aspects. To be the Point, therefore, is also to be the Gate.
Besant's recent attempts to thrust upon them her own interpretations of certain Hindu doctrines interpretations, too, which are foreign to their own has led to a spirit of opposition, where but recently appreciation and favour existed. Theosophy, as a harmonizer of faiths, is not likely to accomplish much that will be permanently good.
It was interesting and well written, but the only paragraph which remains in my memory was an excellent analysis of the initial difference between Christianity and Theosophy. The Abbé kindly copied it out for me next day, but I must quote from memory. "Christianity is a stretching down of the Divinity to Man. "Theosophy is the attempt of Man, by his own efforts, to reach the Divine."
For what men needed then, as indeed they still need, and will always need, was not merely a rule of life and a mirror to the heart, but also a comprehensive and satisfactory theory of things, a philosophy or theosophy.
It was Iamblichus, born in the Lebanon region; we do not know in what year; or much about him at all, beyond that he was an aristocrat, and well-to-do; and that he conducted his Theosophic activities mainly from his native city of Chalcis. he died between 330 and 333; thus through thirteen decades, from the beginning of the third century, these four great Neo-Platonist Adepts were teaching Theosophy in the Roman world; Ammonius in Egypt; Plotinus and Porphyry, the arm of the Movement stretched westward to save, if saved they might be, the Roman west Europe, in Rome itself; then, since that was not be done, Iamblichus in Syria.
This "Institute of Theosophy" takes its name from the School of Science, Art and Philosophy founded by the great Pythagoras, and aspires to be to-day what his Krotona was in the past a centre of spiritual enlightenment. It is run on co-operative lines, and on a non-profit basis.
He talked about things she never knew he had the slightest interest in: theosophy and feminism and Americanization. She couldn't help wondering whether he was trying to convince her of his mental soundness. But he certainly was amazing. Dick received this in silence. He understood. It was true. Raven did fill the time from a racing impetuosity, only slackened when Jerry appeared with the pung.
Theosophy, both as a philosophy, or system of thought, which discovers correlations between things apparently unrelated, and as a life, or system of training whereby it is possible to gain the power to perceive and use these correlations for worthy ends, is of great value to the creative artist, whose success depends on the extent to which he works organically, conforming to the cosmic pattern, proceeding rationally and rhythmically to some predetermined end.
Then as suddenly she began to cry. Philosophy she lacked, but theosophy, which is a pansophy, she possessed when she did not need it. Now, when she needed it most, it was empty as the noise in the street. Even otherwise it could not have changed the unchangeable course of events. There are sins that are scarlet. There are others, far worse, that are drab. Melancholy tops them.
But even the absence of the keen desire for spiritual progress, which is the best evidence of the probability of success, should not deter anybody from entering upon the systematic study of theosophy and devoting to it all the time and energy he can; nor should the thought that many years might pass without producing any very remarkable results lead him to conclude that the undertaking would not be a profitable one.
