In view of our present enterprise, a part of the equipment of the boat had been made to consist of three airtight bags, about three feet long, and capable each of containing five gallons. These had been filled with water the night before, and were now placed in the boat, with our blankets and instruments, consisting of a sextant, telescope, spyglass, thermometer, and barometer.

Two boats were hauled upon the "skids" that ran from the rocks out into the water. A couple of dories floated below them. Now and then a white gull, flashing silver where its plumage caught the sun, soared landward. A young man was standing by the skids, watching the fishing boats through a spyglass. He was tall, with a straight, muscular figure clad in a rough fishing suit.

He was called, as he had directed, at four in the morning, but no change in the weather was reported, and no sail had been seen. At four bells in the morning watch two sails were reported to him, one dead ahead, and the other on the port beam. He hastened to the deck, and found Mr. Amblen using his spyglass, and trying to make out the distant sails.

A base line permanently fixed on the ship is the one side of a triangle required. The distance of the object to be hit is determined by its being the apex of an imaginary triangle, and at each of the other angles, at the two ends of the base line, is fixed a spyglass. These are directed at the object.

Though making all possible speed, the pirate schooner seemed to rise on the waves with a more sluggish heave than before. Job, watching her through the spyglass, turned to Isaiah Hawkes. "Don't she look sort o' soggy to you?" he asked. "I can't quite make out whether that's a hole in her planking or by the Great Hook Block! See there, now, when she lifts!

A little farther, and there the vessel lies before us, quietly at anchor, with her sails all furled. "Again we see the men upon the deck, faintly, but still we see them. "Again we shout. "We see a man halting by the bulwarks; something glitters in his hand. Is it a spyglass? "No; he moves away. "Is that a man mounting to the mizen cross-trees? "Yes, it is a man.

Just then the chief officer drew the captain's attention anew. The latter interrupted his strolling and aimed his spyglass at the point indicated. He observed it a good while. As for me, deeply puzzled, I went below to the lounge and brought back an excellent long-range telescope I habitually used.

Captain Blossom had taken the spyglass along, and as they drew closer to the wreck he gazed long and earnestly at the men walking the deck of the Golden Wave. "They are my crew," he announced at last. "And they are in tatters." "They must have had a hard time of it since you were cast ashore," said Dick. "Unless I am mistaken, not a one of them is sober," went on the captain.

Takes practice to keep your eyesight so's you can see round a curve like that," he added, winking at Ellery. "She's a brigantine, Zeb," observed the keeper, handing up the spyglass. "And flyin' the British colors. Look's if she might be one of them salt boats from Turk's Islands.

I slung my spyglass over my shoulder, and, thinking that I might get a good shot at some birds, filled my powder-flask and shot-belt, and rifle in hand, followed by Solon, stepped into the boat. I took one oar and Spratt another, and we had two black men whom the chief mate had observed were first-rate hands at turning turtles.
