Thus in the Vatican Bible, of which we shall learn more by and by, Esdras First and Second succeed the Chronicles; Tobit and Judith are between Nehemiah and Esther; the Wisdom of Solomon and Sirach follow Solomon's Song; Baruch is next to Jeremiah; Daniel is followed by Susanna and Bel and the Dragon, and the collection closes with the three books of Maccabees.
Jesus maintained that each one ought to await the kingdom of God with fear and trembling. The bad religious tendency represented by Pharisaism did not reign without opposition. But these good seeds had been choked. The beautiful maxims of Hillel, summing up the whole law as equity, those of Jesus, son of Sirach, making worship consist in doing good, were forgotten or anathematized.
"Jesus the son of Sirach prefigures the Messiah as a Prophet and a Doctor. As to the figure next to him, it may equally well be Judith or Esther: her identity is doubtful; there is nothing that can help us to determine it. "At any rate, as I told you but now, each is a harbinger of the Virgin.
Seneca declares that folly is its own burden, omnis stultitia laborat fastidio sui, a very true saying, with which may be compared the words of Jesus, the son of Sirach, The life of a fool is worse than death . And, as a rule, it will be found that a man is sociable just in the degree in which he is intellectually poor and generally vulgar.
It is good to keep the secret of the king, says Jesus the son of Sirach; but it is also good to reveal to the world the greatness of the mercy of God. We have been told that a stone has been placed over her grave.
Let me read you a few passages which will illustrate their familiarity with the apocryphal books. James i.19: "Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak." Sirach v. 11; iv. 29: "Be swift to hear." "Be not hasty in thy tongue." Hebrews i. 3: "Who being the effulgence of his glory, and the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power."
But you, Sir Knight, what is yours, when you appeal without scruple to that which you deem most holy, even while you are about to transgress the most solemn of your vows as a knight, and as a man of religion?" "It is gravely and well preached, O daughter of Sirach!" answered the Templar; "but, gentle Ecclesiastics, thy narrow Jewish prejudices make thee blind to our high privilege.
Jesus, the son of Sirach, for instance, declares that He that telleth a tale to a fool speaketh to one in slumber: when he hath told his tale, he will say, What is the matter? And Hamlet says, A knavish speech sleeps in a fool's ear. And Goethe is of the same opinion, that a dull ear mocks at the wisest word,
Now, since inquiry and examination can relate only to things so obscure and uncertain as to stand in need of it, and to persons who are capable of it; the proper advice to be given to plain honest men, to secure them from the extremes both of superstition and irreligion, is that of the Son of Sirach: In every good work trust thy own soul; for this is the keeping of the commandment. Rom. xii. 15.
"However, to avoid confusion, we will follow the statues in order as they stand in this porch, three on each side. "On the left Balaam, the Queen of Sheba and Solomon. "On the right, Jesus the son of Sirach, Judith or Esther, and Joseph."
