Our knowledge of spirits is always mediated by "notions" not by "ideas" in the strict sense, that is, not by "images." Cf. Principles, §§ 27, 135 seq., especially in the second edition.
Freely translated, "the traveller talks to himself to keep up his courage on the road." His works were not published till long after his death, in 1665. Compare again, Fra Lippo Lippi, vs. 215 et seq. Jacques Callot was an eminent French artist of the XVII century, born at Nancy in 1592, died 1635. Matthaeus and Paul Brill were two celebrated Dutch painters.
This work, written by one who had a long and intimate knowledge of the Khasi tribes, gives an admirable account of the people, their institutions and domestic life. See also Sir J. Hooker, Himalayan Journal, Vol. II, pp. 273 et seq.; Dalton, Descriptive Ethnology of Bengal; and a series of papers by J. R. Logan, in the Journal of the Indian Archipelago, 1850-1857. Mr.

A Mary Taylor, First Duty of Women, p. 93, Emily Faithfull, London, 1870. On the subject of Co-education, I refer again to the Report of Wm. T. Harris, Superintendent of the Public Schools of St. Louis, for 1869-70, p. 17 et seq., where the actual effects, physical, mental and moral are given in detail.
My statement as to the existence of a Jewish colony at Ramleh in the eleventh century is based on Genizah documents at Cambridge, T.S. 13 J. 1. For my account of the Trade Routes of the Jews in the medieval period, I am indebted to Beazley's "Dawn of Modern Geography," p. 430. The Letter of Nachmanides is quoted from Dr. Schechter's "Studies in Judaism," First Series, pp. 131 et seq.
Tusc. 1, 74; Rep. 6, 15. The Stoics held the same view about suicide, which they authorized in extreme cases, but much less freely than is commonly supposed; cf. Sen. Ep. 117, 22 nihil mihi videtur turpius quam optare mortem. See Zeller, Stoics, Epicureans, and Sceptics, Ch. 12, C ; cf. also Lecky, Hist. of European Morals, I. p. 228 et seq.
After the first attack on Carlin's division, I doubt if the fighting was as desperate as described by him, p. 385, et seq. I was close up with the Fifteenth Corps, on the 20th and 21st, considered the fighting as mere skirmishing, and know that my orders were to avoid a general battle, till we could be sure of Goldsboro', and of opening up a new base of supply.
Anderson, vol. iv. part ii. p. 125, et seq. Goodall, vol. ii. p. 184, 211, 217. As the commissioners of the queen of Scots refused to give in any answer to Murray's charge, the necessary consequence seemed to be, that there could be no further proceedings in the conference.
