Susan's journal contains many entries such as, "Did a large washing to-day.... Spent to-day at the spinning-wheel.... Baked 21 loaves of bread.... Wove three yards of carpet yesterday.... Got my quilt out of the frame last 5th day.... The new saw-mill has just been raised; we had 20 men to supper on 6th day, and 12 on 7th day."
"What luck?" he asked. "None at all," I answered morosely. "Sorry to keep you waiting." "That's all right," remarked R. "What do you think I 've been doing? I 've been fishing out of the saw-mill window just to kill time. There was a patch of floating sawdust there, kind of unlikely place for trout, anyway, but I thought I'd put on a worm and let him crawl around a little."
The nwanas, of course, were too large for house-logs. To have felled one of them would have been a task equal almost to the building of a house; and to have made planks of them would have required a steam saw-mill. A log-house was not to be thought of either. Now a frail structure of poles and thatch would not have given sufficient security.
Somebody put up a city, on this embarcadero where I landed my supplies for my fort. My saw-mill is a hotel the City Hotel and for it and the land it is on somebody gets $30,000 per year, they tell me. Nobody work for me any more; even my Indians go to mining gold, and my wheat fields are stepped all over.
They own a home farm of two thousand acres, and an outlying farm of two hundred and eighty acres, mostly good land, and very well placed, a canal and two railroads running through their home farm. They have a saw-mill and grist-mill, which are sources of income to them; and they raise broom-corn, make brooms, and dry apples and sweet corn. The women make fancy articles for sale.
Then they saw them up, and make boards." "What mill?" said Oliver. "At that saw-mill near the carding-mill. The mill down in the village, you know, is a grist-mill." By this time, the boys had got to the top of the hill, and they got into the sleigh, and rode along.
But they are almost universally badly located; exposed to the noise, dust, and danger of the highway; unattractive, if not absolutely repulsive in their external appearance, and built at the least possible expense of material and labor. They are generally on one corner of public roads, and sometimes adjacent to a cooper's shop, or between a blacksmith's shop and a saw-mill.
Let her come to me when you leave the city it will be better for her than to help work the saw-mill; and I have as good a right to her as anybody, for Amy before her was like my own child." The doctor spoke not with his usual light jesting manner but very seriously. Hugh's lips parted, Mrs. Rossitur looked with a sad thoughtful look at Fleda, Mr. Rossitur walked up and down looking at nobody.
Primitive as was this saw-mill some difficulty was experienced in procuring proper hands to run it. James Simonds in his letter of June 20, 1767, to Hazen & Jarvis writes: "The sloop Bachelor did not return from up the River before this morning.
When they married it was agreed that, as soon as he could straighten out the difficulties resulting from Mrs. Frome's long illness, they would sell the farm and saw-mill and try their luck in a large town. Ethan's love of nature did not take the form of a taste for agriculture.
